What Ram Temple Chief Priest Said On Uddhav Thackeray's "No Invite" Remark

Reacting to the remarks made by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray that he has not received invitation for the inauguration event of Ayodhya's Ram Temple, Acharya Satyendra Das, Chief Priest at Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple on Sunday said that invitations have been extended only to those who are "devotees of Lord Ram".

Speaking to ANI, Acharya Satyendra Das said, "Invitations are only extended to those who are devotees of Lord Ram. It is totally wrong to say that BJP is fighting in the name of Lord Ram, our PM is respected everywhere. He has done immense work under his tenure. This is not politics. This is his devotion."

Acharya Satyendra Das also lashed out at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on his remarks "BJP is left now to announce Lord Ram as their candidate".

"Sanjay Raut has so much pain that even he can't express that, they were the ones who used to fight elections in the name of Lord Ram. Those who believed in Lord Ram are in power, what nonsense he is talking about? He is insulting Lord Ram," Chief Priest said.

Earlier today, Shiv Sena (UBT faction) leader Sanjay Raut lashed out at the BJP amid the hoopla around the Ram Temple opening in Ayodhya next month, saying that it will seek votes in the name of Lord Ram ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year.

"The PMO and government should shift base to Ayodhya. They will ask for votes only in Ram's name because they have done nothing else," Mr Raut said.

Mr Raut added that Shiv Sena members put their blood and toil into the Ram Mandir movement.

"Balasaheb Thackrey and thousands of Shiv Saniks contributed to it," he said."Even we are devotees of Ram. In fact, we are the biggest devotees of Ram and our party has sacrificed a lot for the Ram temple. They have taken our country back by 5000 years," he said.

As per temple officials, the consecration ceremony in Ayodhya's Ram Mandir will be held over seven days, starting on January 16.

On the final day, January 22, after the morning puja, the deity of Ram Lala will be consecrated in 'Mrigashira Nakshatra' in the afternoon.

"Have To Go To Jail For Paths We Have Chosen": Arvind Kejriwal To Workers

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal Sunday said his party has gained popularity for its "work-centric politics" and asserted the party workers should be ready "to go to jail for the paths we have chosen for the public good".

Chairing the National Executive and 12th National Council meetings of the party, held virtually on Sunday, he said, "The Aam Aadmi Party has risen to the third place among 1,350 political parties in these 10 years." "If we were not successful and did not do anything good, then none of our party leaders would have gone to jail and today everyone would have been happy with their families," he said.

Mr Kejriwal's remarks assume significance since the Enforcement Directorate has asked him to appear before it on January 3 in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case.

The Delhi CM said that two major parties have ruled this country for 75 years and said "these people will not relinquish power so easily".

"I think we are facing a struggle, but there's no need for us to be saddened. Our five leaders who are in jail today are our heroes. We are very proud of all of them. I am continuously in touch with lawyers. It's a very good thing that even while in jail, all our leaders' spirits are still very high.

"On the day Manish Sisodia's bail was cancelled, he sent a message saying, 'It's okay, I'll stay in jail for as many days as needed. This entire case is fabricated, and my struggle will continue'," he added.

At the National Council meeting, Mr Kejriwal asserted that the AAP has given the country a viable alternative in electoral politics and has gained popularity for its "work-centric politics".

Addressing the party workers, he said, "If you give good education to children, you will have to go to jail. If you provide free treatment to the poor, you will have to go to jail. We will have to go to jail for the paths we have chosen for public good." He also praised Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for the remarkable progress in the state.

"We have shown what work can be done that other parties couldn't accomplish in 75 years. In the last two years, the work done by the AAP government in Punjab shows that if our government is in full power in a state, we can work very swiftly and do wonders," he asserted.

He further said that AAP has made a significant impact on national politics in 10 years. For the first time in the country, opposition parties have been compelled to discuss schools and hospitals, he opined.

"Now, these people have replaced manifesto with 'guarantee' term stolen from us. They have started talking about 'Modi's guarantee' and 'Congress's guarantee'. These people have given guarantees to the public, but none of them fulfilled them because their intentions are not right, whereas we are fulfilling all our guarantees," he added.

He also informed the AAP officials about the national council and executive meetings of the party in physical mode in Amritsar in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Explaining the hurdles faced by the Delhi government and the freedom enjoyed in full-fledged state Punjab, Mr Kejriwal said, "In Delhi, due to obstructions created by the LG and the Centre, we set up 550 Mohalla Clinics but in Punjab 662 Aam Aadmi Clinics (Mohalla Clinics) are operational now and by January 26, 2024, the number will reach 750 in just two years." He also asked the party workers to build and strengthen the organization across the country. Elections cannot be won without a strong organization in states, he said.

"The AAP is a part of the INDIA alliance in the Lok Sabha elections. We must contest well on the seats we get in seat sharing, and our entire effort will be to win all those seats. Volunteers of the party from states where the AAP isn't contesting Lok Sabha elections will come and help in the places where elections are being contested," he added.

After the Lok Sabha elections, the Haryana Assembly election is the most significant for the party, he said.

"Unaware God Would Come": Welfare Scheme Beneficiary As PM Visits Her Home

Mera Manjhi, the tenth-crore beneficiary of the Centre's flagship Ujjwala Yojana expressed her happiness after Prime Minister Narendra Modi unexpectedly visited her residence on Saturday.

"I was not aware that he would visit us. He came to our home. We are feeling very happy. We were not aware that God would arrive in such a way," Mera said with a big smile on her face.

Amid his packed schedule during a day-long visit to Ayodhya, PM Modi took time to visit Mera's house, engaging in conversations with beneficiaries and inquiring about her well-being over tea.

PM Modi was offered tea at the home of the beneficiary of the flagship scheme that provides clean cooking fuel such as LPG cylinders to rural and deprived households, which otherwise had been using firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes.

PM asked the beneficiary about everyone's well-being in her family and the benefits she got through the schemes of the government.

After the first sip of the tea, offered to him by Mera, PM, in a humorous way, asked her, "bahut meethi chai peete ho ap log (You people take so much sugar in your tea)."

To this, Mera said that she often makes tea mistakenly with lots of sugar. "Humesha hi ban jati hai," she replied.

Later on, the PM praised her, saying that he is very good at making tea.

"You make good tea. I am chaiwala, so I know how to make tea," he said.

Mera, while speaking to ANI, further expressed her delight over meeting PM Modi.

Later on, the PM took to X to share the video of him meeting Mera Manjhi and her family and said, "The experience of visiting sister Meera Manjhi's house in the city of Lord Shri Ram has become unforgettable!"

A large crowd gathered to greet PM Modi as he walked through the narrow streets of the temple town. He also took selfies with two children in Ayodhya and fulfilled their requests for autographs.

The Prime Minister even signed a painting that a boy showed him.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was started in May 2016 to provide clean cooking fuel to poor households across the country. Under PMUY, a deposit-free LPG connection is provided to adult women from poor households.

Seven Uncapped Players Named In South Africa's Test Squad For New Zealand

Only two of the players who were in South Africa's Test win over India on Thursday are in a 14-man squad for two Tests in New Zealand in February. Cricket South Africa on Saturday named a squad which includes seven uncapped players, including a new captain in left-handed opening batsman Neil Brand. Batsman Keegan Petersen and David Bedingham are the only players who were part of South Africa's innings win in the first Test against India in Centurion. Due to a ruling by Cricket South Africa, no players contracted to franchises in the SA20 competition, which overlaps with the Tests, were eligible for selection.

Despite having to travel with a makeshift squad, Test coach Shukri Conrad said he was confident that the team would be competitive.

"The players selected for this tour have every chance of challenging New Zealand," said Conrad, who pointed out that most of the players had shown their ability while playing for South Africa A in recent series against West Indies A and India A.

Brand, 27, was born in Johannesburg but went to high school in England at King's College, Taunton.

He has a solid first-class record with 2906 runs at an average of 39.27. He is also a capable left-arm orthodox spin bowler who has taken 72 wickets at an average of 30.81.

The early announcement of the touring party appeared to end speculation that opening batsman Dean Elgar might be persuaded to delay his retirement from international cricket beyond the second Test at Newlands in Cape Town, starting on Wednesday.

Elgar was named man of the match in the first Test against India after scoring 185 in South Africa's only innings. He will lead the team in the second Test following an injury to Temba Bavuma.

South African squad:

Neil Brand (capt), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin (wkt), Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, Khaya Zondo.

"If We Have To Win Tests...": Rohit's Honest Admission After Loss To SA

India skipper Rohit Sharma had no qualms about admitting that his team was simply not good enough to challenge South Africa, putting the blame for the embarrassing innings and 32 run loss in the first Test on the lack of collective effort. India put up a shoddy show both with bat and ball as they were bundled out for 131 in 34.1 overs in their second innings after they allowed South Africa to score 408 in 108.4 overs in their first essay. The visitors had scored 245 in the first innings.

"We were not good enough to win. Having been put in to bat, KL (Rahul) batted well to get us that score but then we didn't exploit the conditions with the ball and then again didn't show up today with the bat," said Rohit during the post-match presentation.

"If we have to win Test matches, we have to come together collectively and we didn't do that. Guys have come here before, we know what to expect and everyone has their own plan.

"Our batters were challenged and we didn't adapt well. This is a boundary-scoring ground, we saw them score many but we need to understand the opposition and their strengths as well. We didn't bat well in both innnings, that's why we stand here."

The India skipper struggled to find much positives with the match ending inside three days.

"Not too many positives to finish the game within three days, but KL showed what we need to do on this sort of pitch," he said.

KL Rahul had scored a century in the first innings.

"Our bowlers, a lot of these guys haven't been here before so I don't want to be too critical.

"Important for us to regroup, we go through these times as sportsmen and we need to be ready for the next Test now."

Playing his last international series, Dean Elgar slammed a magnificent 185 and the opener termed it a "special" knock and highlighted his partnerships with Tony de Zorzi (28) and Marco Jansen (84).

"Pretty special knock. Sometimes what we want to do hasn't worked out as plans, but happy that it worked today. I think you need to keep things nice and simple, the game is already pretty complex," said the 36-year-old, who was adjudged the Player of the Match.

"Focus on the ball, play nice and straight. Play late and be great. You got to ride the roller when it is in your favour.

"Good partnerships with Tony, and then Jansen showed his talent as well. You need fast bowlers and a spinner potentially to take 20 wickets, that's how we win Test matches."

Proteas pace trio of Nandre Burger (4/33), Kagiso Rabada (2/32) and Marco Jansen (3/36) smothered the visitors with a disciplined attack as India folded for 131 in 34.1 overs.

"(Rabada) KG was brilliant, but then Nandre showed why he has been such a shining light for South African cricket," Elgar said.

"You can't win a two-Test series if you don't win the first one, the Indians are difficult to beat.

"We'll have a few days out to relax and enjoy this. We were pretty clinical, our fielding wasn't the best and we didn't make it too easy for ourselves at times."

Kerala Governor Gives Nod For Induction Of New Ministers In State Cabinet

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has approved the proposal of the state government for the induction of two new ministers in the state cabinet.

In a recent Facebook post, the Raj Bhavan said that Ramachandran Kadannappally and K B Ganesh Kumar would be inducted into the Council of Ministers as per the provisions of Article 164-1 of the Constitution.

Mr Khan has approved the proposal of the CM in this regard, the FB post said.

The swearing-in-ceremony of the ministers designate would be held on December 29 at Raj Bhavan, it added.

Earlier, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) had announced a cabinet reshuffle and said that new ministers would take oath on December 29.

LDF convener E P Jayarajan had said on Sunday that Transport Minister Antony Raju of the Democratic Kerala Congress and Ports Minister Ahammad Devarkovil of the Indian National League had tendered their resignations.

Ramachandran Kadannappally of Congress (S) and K B Ganesh Kumar of Kerala Congress (B) would take oath as ministers for the rest of the term, he had said.

When the second LDF government came to power in the state in May 2021, partners in the CPI(M)-led alliance had reached an understanding to allocate cabinet berths to four single-MLA parties on a "sharing the term" basis.

The LDF then took the decision to share the term, citing the constitutional clauses that restrict the cabinet to 21 members.

Vinesh Phogat To Return Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards

Less than a week after Sakshee Malikkh announced her retirement from wrestling and Bajrang Punia returned his Padma Shri, Vinesh Phogat, the third top wrestler who was part of the protests against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has announced that she will return her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award.

Brij Bhushan, a BJP MP, had been accused of sexual harassment by many women wrestlers, and Ms Malikkh, Mr Punia and Ms Phogat had been at the forefront of the protests against him.

The wrestlers' decisions have been taken in quick succession in a span of six days since a panel led by Sanjay Singh, a close aide of Brij Bhushan, won the elections to the Wrestling Federation of India by a landslide on Thursday, indicating a continuity of leadership in the body. The panel was suspended by the sports ministry on Sunday.

In an emotional open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, Ms Phogat, who has won gold medals at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games, asked whether women wrestlers were made only to grace government advertisements and said she is returning the Khel Ratna - the country's highest sporting honour - and Arjuna Award so that they don't become a "burden on the path of living with dignity".

Ms Phogat has also said that the wrestlers were considered the country's pride when they won medals, but are now being labelled traitors because they spoke out for justice. "Prime Minister, I want to ask you, are we traitors?" she wrote.

'Daughter Of Your House'

In the letter, written in Hindi, Ms Phogat says, "Sakshee Malikkh has quit wrestling and Bajrang Punia has returned his Padma Shri. The whole country knows why the players who won Olympic medals for the country were forced to do all this; and you are the head of the country, so this matter must have reached you too. Prime Minister, I am Vinesh Phogat, a daughter of your house and I am writing this letter to you to tell you about the condition I have been in for the past year."

"I remember the year 2016, when Sakshee Malikkh won a medal in the Olympics, your government named her the brand ambassador of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao'. When this was announced, all the women players of the country were happy and were sending congratulatory messages to each other. Today, ever since Sakshi had to leave wrestling, I am remembering that year again and again. Are we women players made only to appear on government advertisements," she asked.

Stating that winning an Olympics medal is her dream, which is now fading, she said that the lives of women wrestlers are nothing like the "fancy advertisements".

Referring to Brij Bhushan's remark after the wrestling body elections that his dominance would continue, Ms Phogat exhorted the Prime Minister to spare five minutes to listen to the former WFI chief's comments. She alleged that the "exploiter" Brij Bhushan had admitted on television that he had made women wrestlers uncomfortable and had utilised every opportunity to humiliate them.

'Called Traitors'

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist said the wrestlers had been struggling on the streets for a year but were still waiting for justice.

"When we won medals for the country, the whole country considered us its pride. Now that we raised our voice for justice, we are being called traitors. Prime Minister, I want to ask you, are we traitors," she asked.

The wrestler, who broke out in tears at a press conference after the results of the WFI election on Thursday, said no mother would like to see her daughter in the condition she finds herself in.

Ms Phogat said she was ecstatic when she received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and the Arjuna Award. "But now I want to get rid of the image of Vinesh receiving the award, because that was a dream and what is happening with us now is the reality," she wrote.

Stating that the awards have no meaning in her life now, the wrestler said, "Every woman wants to live life with respect. Thus, Prime Minister sir, I want to return my Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to you so that these awards do not become a burden on us in the path of living with dignity."

SA Skipper Temba Bavuma Sustains Hamstring Injury vs India In 1st Test

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma sustained an injury to his left hamstring while fielding against India in the second session of the first Test match in Centurion on Tuesday, according to ESPNcricinfo. Following the injury, the 33-year-old was taken to a hospital for scans, where the initial reports revealed that he suffered an injury to his hamstring. The hospital added that he would go through further "medical evaluations" to make sure he could take part in the long-format game or not. According to ESPNcricinfo, a Cricket South Africa statement said he will "undergo daily medical evaluations to determine" if he will play any further role in the match.

Bavuma suffered the injury during the 20th over of India's first inning. While chasing the ball off a shot from Virat Kohli's bat, the Proteas skipper managed to stop the ball but unfortunately injured his left hamstring while saving. Following the incident, Bavuma walked off the field immediately.

If the skipper is unable to come to the crease to bat, then the hosts will be a player short for the rest of the first Test match since Bavuma cannot be replaced due to an external injury. He will also be doubtful for the second Test match against India, which will start on January 3 in Cape Town.

Recapping the first Test, rain played spoilsport as the majority of the third session was ruled out on Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa on Tuesday at the SuperSport Park.

At the end of Day 1, India posted a total of 208/8 in 59 overs with KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj unbeaten with respective scores of 70(105)* and 0(10)*.

KL Rahul fought valiantly throughout the time that he spent on the field. While the rest of the batters failed to overcome Kagiso Rabada, he fought with vigour to take India's score past the 200-run mark. Siraj also showed patience during the 10 balls that he faced.

The only casualty in the final session was Jasprit Bumrah, who lost his patience and ended up losing his wicket to Marco Jansen after playing 19 balls.

Will Not Stop Schemes By Previous Government: Rajasthan Chief Minister

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Monday said none of the welfare schemes launched by the previous Congress government in the state will be discontinued.

He was speaking at a function organised by the BJP to mark Good Governance Day on the birth anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Reacting to the allegations by the Congress that his government would discontinue the public welfare schemes launched by the previous government, Bhajan Lal Sharma said, "Congress people are saying our work, our schemes... I want to tell you that we will not stop any of the schemes."

The chief minister said free medicines will continue to be made available at government hospitals and the number of essential drugs would also be increased.

Mr Vajyapee made schemes for the welfare of the poor and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the initiative forward, Bhajan Lal Sharma said.

BJP stalwart Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924. He died on August 16, 2018.

Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari and other leaders of the party also paid tributes to Vajpayee on the day.

Speaking at another programme in the district's Ajayrajpura area, Bhajan Lal Sharma said his government was committed to making Rajasthan a leader in public welfare.

He also said that every decision taken by the government revolves around the welfare and progress of the state.

Underlining his commitment to basic health services, Bhajan Lal Sharma announced plans to provide health insurance of up to Rs 25 lakh to eligible individuals under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. He said a proposal has been sent in this connection to the Centre.

The number of medicines under the free medicine scheme will be increased and other schemes of the former Congress government will be reviewed and strengthened, the chief minister said.

The former Congress government had launched the Chiranjeevi Health Insurance Scheme for citizens under which insurance cover of up to Rs 25 lakh was being provided.

Chief Minister Sharma has now indicated that the scheme would continue but its name could be changed.

Bhajan Lal Sharma also highlighted the importance of the Vikas Bharat Sankalp Yatra to bring the benefits of the central government schemes to every citizen.

"The Vikas Bharat Sankalp Yatra aims to create awareness about various central government schemes, encouraging eligible individuals to join and benefit from them," he said.

Reflecting on Atal Bihari Vajpayee's contributions, Bhajan Lal Sharma acknowledged his role in India's economic development, international positioning, and infrastructure enhancement.

During the yatra, the chief minister administered a pledge to government employees, urging them to uphold the highest standards of good governance.

After the programme, the chief minister visited the house of a local farmer and had lunch there. He was served 'bajra roti' among others.

On INDIA Bloc Not Naming PM Face, Sharad Pawar's Morarji Desai Reference

With the Opposition bloc INDIA yet to announce its prime ministerial face for the upcoming general elections, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar said there are no consequences if a PM face is not projected as voters will take the call to bring a change if they are in the mood.

Even in the 1977 Lok Sabha polls (post Emergency) no one was projected as the PM face, Sharad Pawar, responding to a question about the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance not having a prime ministerial face, said.

"In the 1977 elections, no face was projected for PM and after the election, Moraraji Desai was elected for the post. His name was nowhere before the elections and, in fact, a new party came into existence. After the polls, Mr Desai was made PM. There are no consequences if a face is not projected. If people are in the mood for a change, they will take the call to bring that change," the former Union Minister said.

Morarji Desai, who became the country's first non-Congress PM, remained in office for 856 days. He served as the fifth PM from 1977 to 1979, in the post-emergency government led by the Janata Party.

Asked about a poll survey that gave the Maha Vikas Aghadi an edge over the ruling alliance in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Mr Pawar said surveys are just indications and one should not jump to conclusions on the basis of such exercises.

New Indian Penal Code Has Become "More Draconian": P Chidambaram

With President Droupadi Murmu giving assent to the three new criminal justice bills, Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday said the new Indian Penal Code has become "more draconian" and asserted that the successor government in 2024 must review these laws and remove the "draconian" provisions.

The three new laws -- the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act -- replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.

In a post on X, former Union home minister Chidambaram said, "Just as the Christmas Day celebrations are coming to an end, we hear the news that the President has given her assent to the three criminal law Bills." The new Indian Penal Code has become "more draconian", he alleged.

"If you realize that the Code is more often than not used against the poor, working class and the weaker sections of the people, the law will become an instrument of oppression against these sections of the people," P Chidambaram said.

"Be it noted that the vast majority of prisoners (including under-trials) are poor and belong to the working class and the oppressed sections," he said.

The new Criminal Procedure Code contains many provisions that are unconstitutional and violate Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution, he alleged.

"It is the poor and oppressed sections of the people who will bear the brunt of the new Penal Code and the new Criminal Procedure Code," he said.

P Chidambaram contended that instead of strengthening "due process of law", the new Criminal Procedure Code contains many provisions that severely restrict "freedom" and "personal liberty".

"The new provisions for arrest and police custody (that can extend custody up to 60 days or 90 days) will only lead to police excesses and custodial persecution," he said.

"One of the first tasks of the successor government in 2024 must be to review these laws and remove the draconian provisions," Chidambaram said.

President Murmu on Monday gave assent to the three new criminal justice bills which were cleared by Parliament last week.

While replying to a debate on the three bills in Parliament, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the focus was on delivering justice rather than handing down punishment.

The three legislations aim at completely overhauling the criminal justice system in the country by giving definition of various offences and their punishments. These have given a clear definition of terrorism, abolished sedition as a crime and introduced a new section titled "offences against the state".

The bills were first introduced during the Monsoon session of Parliament in August. After the Standing Committee on Home Affairs made several recommendations, the government decided to withdraw the bills and introduced their redrafted versions last week.

How Has Virat Kohli Performed In Boxing Day Tests? Here's A Look At Stats

A month after a heartbreaking ICC Cricket World Cup final loss to Australia, star India batter Virat Kohli will take to the field in whites during the first Test against South Africa in Centurion, a Boxing Day affair, on Tuesday. As it has been with Virat over the years, the weight of expectations, the cheers of fans, and the anticipation of a century or record break will be at their highest when he takes to the field. Virat has great Test stats against South Africa and in South Africa as well. In 14 Tests against the Proteas, he has scored 1,236 runs at an average of 56.18, with three tons and four fifties in 24 innings. His best score is 254 not out.

In South Africa, Virat has scored 719 runs in seven Tests at an average of 51.35, with two centuries and three fifties in 14 innings. His best score is 153.

Virat's statistics in the Boxing Day Test are pretty mixed. In his debut Boxing Day Test back in 2011 against Australia at Melbourne, he could score just 11 and 0 in his two innings. India lost that match by 122 runs.

His next Boxing Day outing was slightly better, against South Africa, in which he scored 46,11. India lost that Test by 10 wickets.

His next Boxing Day Test outing against Australia was brilliant, as he scored 169 and 54 in both his innings to help India draw the match. From the next Test onwards, a new era of Indian cricket started with Virat as Test skipper following the sudden retirement of MS Dhoni.

Four years later, Virat played another Boxing Day Test at MCG, scoring 82 and 0 in both innings. India won that match by 137 runs, giving Virat his first-ever win in a Boxing Day Test.

At Centurion three years later, Virat was going through a rough patch in Test cricket, scoring 35 and 18 in both innings of his fifth Boxing Day Test. India won the match by 113 runs.

Overall, Virat has played five Boxing Day Tests, scoring 426 runs in 10 innings at an average of 42.60, with a century and two fifties. Viras has won two Boxing Day Tests, both of them as a captain, lost two and drawn one.

Given the form Virat is in, this Centurion Test will serve as Virat's chance to continue his rich run of form and improve his Boxing Day Test batting numbers.

3 Convicted For Kidnapping Newborn From State-Run Hospital Near Mumbai

A court in Maharashtra's Thane district has convicted three people accused of kidnapping a newborn from a government hospital and sentenced them to five years and six months of rigorous imprisonment.

Additional sessions judge GG Bhansali found the accused Gudiya Sonu Rajbhar (43), her husband Sonu (49), and Vilas Kailas Srivastav (57) guilty of charges under Section 363 (kidnapping) and 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code.

Additional public prosecutor Varsha Chandane informed the court that on January 14, 2018, Gudiya kidnapped a baby boy within four hours of his birth from a government hospital and took him home.

The police later traced the accused and found the baby and reunited him with his parents, she said.

The accused couple had planned to give the infant to the third accused, Vikas Srivastav, the court was told.

Eighteen prosecution witnesses, including the police and experts, were examined during the trial.

The judge, in his order, noted that for the newborn baby, the company of his mother and breastmilk are like oxygen.

The court observed that the accused couple were parents to six children and had been in jail since 2018. Hence, it was appropriate to punish them for the period they had been in jail.

3 Vivo-India Executives Arrested In Money Laundering Case

The Enforcement Directorate has arrested three vivo-India executives in connection with its money laundering probe against the Chinese smartphone maker and some others, official sources said on Saturday.

Interim CEO of vivo-India Hong Xuquan alias Terry -- a Chinese national -- Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Harinder Dahiya and consultant Hemant Munjal have been taken into custody under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.

They were presented before a court which sent them to ED custody for three days, the sources said.

An email sent by PTI to a company spokesperson seeking comments on the development remained unanswered.

The Enforcement Directorate had earlier arrested four people -- mobile company Lava International's MD Hari Om Rai, Chinese national Guangwen alias Andrew Kuang, and chartered accountants Nitin Garg and Rajan Malik -- in the case. They are in judicial custody at present.

The federal agency had filed a charge sheet against these four and vivo-India before a special PMLA court in Delhi. The court recently took cognisance of the charge sheet.

Special Judge Kiran Gupta summoned the accused on February 19.

The ED had claimed in its court papers presented for the earlier four arrestees that their alleged activities enabled vivo-India to make wrongful gains that were detrimental to the economic sovereignty of India.

It had raided vivo-India and its linked persons in July last year and claimed to have busted a major money laundering racket involving Chinese nationals and multiple Indian companies.

The ED had then alleged that Rs 62,476 crore was "illegally" transferred by vivo-India to China to avoid payment of taxes in India.

The company had said that it "firmly adheres to its ethical principles and remains dedicated to legal compliance".

Lava International's Hari Om Rai had recently told a court that though his company and vivo-India were in talks to launch a joint venture in India a decade ago, he had nothing to do with the Chinese firm or its representatives since 2014.

"He has not derived any monetary benefit nor has he engaged in any transaction with vivo-India or any entity allegedly related to vivo, let alone having been associated with any alleged proceeds of crime," Rai's lawyer had told the court.

The probe agency filed an enforcement case information report (ECIR), the ED's equivalent of a police FIR, on February 3 after studying a December 2022 Delhi Police FIR against an associated company of vivo-India, Grand Prospect International Communication Pvt. Ltd. (GPICPL), its directors, shareholders and some other professionals.

The police complaint was filed by the Corporate Affairs Ministry alleging that GPICPL and its shareholders used "forged" identification documents and "falsified" addresses at the time of incorporation of the company in December 2014.

This company had its registered address in Himachal Pradesh's Solan, Gujarat's Gandhinagar and in Jammu.

The crackdown on the leading Chinese company came after the federal probe agency found that three Chinese nationals -- all of whom "left" India between 2018 and 2021 -- and another person from that country incorporated 23 companies in India in which they were also allegedly helped by CA Nitin Garg.

"The allegations (made by the Corporate Affairs ministry) were found to be true as the investigation revealed that the addresses mentioned by the directors of GPICPL did not belong to them. In fact, it was a government building and the house of a senior bureaucrat," the ED said.

It said vivo Mobiles Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated on August 1, 2014, as a subsidiary of Multi Accord Ltd., a Hong Kong-based company.

The 23 companies incorporated in this country are found to have transferred huge amounts of funds to Vivo India. Further, out of the total sale proceeds of Rs 1,25,185 crore, Vivo India remitted Rs 62,476 crore or almost 50 per cent of the turnover out of India, mainly to China, the ED had alleged.

These remittances, it added, were made to "disclose huge losses in Indian incorporated companies to avoid payment of taxes in India".

The action is seen as part of the Union government's effort to tighten checks on Chinese entities that are allegedly indulging in serious financial crimes like money laundering and tax evasion while operating here.

These developments come amid a military stand-off between the two countries along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh that began more than three years ago.

Renowned Poet And Artist Imroz Dies At 97

Noted poet and artist Inderjeet, known as Imroz, known for his enduring relationship with poet Amrita Pritam, passed away in Mumbai on Friday at the age of 97 due to age-related issues, family sources said.

Alka Kwatra, Pritam's daughter-in-law, told PTI that his last rites were performed at the Dahanukarwadi crematorium at Kandivli in north Mumbai in the presence of family and close friends.

The funeral pyre was lit by Pritam's granddaughter.

Born on January 26, 1926 in Lyallpur, Punjab, Imroz met Amrita Pritam in the 1950s when she was already a well-established figure in Punjabi literature. They lived together for over 40 years until Pritam died in 2005.

Imroz began writing poems after Pritam started keeping unwell, and even after her death, he wrote several poems dedicated to her.

One of Pritam's most celebrated works, 'Main tainu phir milangi,' is said to have been dedicated to Imroz.

IPL Auction 2024: Is Mitchell Starc Worth The Monumental Bill For KKR?

The IPL auction 2024 emerged as an intense battleground where Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) engaged fervently to add Mitchell Starc's firepower to their squad. While there was no doubt that Starc, especially after the ODI World Cup success in India, would be a highly sought-after player in the auction, his acquisition by the KKR for a record-breaking sum of Rs 24.75 crore raised the eyebrows of many. Breaking it down, if KKR play a maximum 17 matches in IPL 2024, Mitchell Starc's acquisition would amount to over Rs 6 lakh per ball bowled or Rs 1.45 crore per match. This prompts the question: Does this investment truly justify the expense?

"Things have changed. When the auction is over, all the 10 teams are going to walk out having spent 100 crores and each team decides to slice it differently," Venky Mysore, the Kolkata Knight Riders' CEO, said while justifying the price tag after the auctions.

"So what you have paid to somebody is a matter of perspective. Ultimately, we're all spending the same amount of money. When you plan your team, from a retention standpoint, with the auction far away, you've no idea of who are the players being released from other teams, trades happening, and all that. So it's a very dynamic environment."

To support Venky Mysore's argument, Kolkata Knight Riders do possess a well-balanced squad despite spending that much on Mitchell Starc.

The side has a formidable batting lineup with the likes of Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Jason Roy, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Manish Pandey in the squad. KKR also have a couple of top-quality all-rounders in Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer and spinners in Sunil Narine, Suyash Sharma, Varun Chakravarthy and Mujeeb Ur Rehman.

Before Starc's arrival, the pace bowling options appeared rather limited. However, the acquisitions of Chetan Sakariya (Rs 50 lakh) and Gus Atkinson (Rs 1.00 crore) during the IPL auction 2024 have significantly bolstered the team's bowling arsenal. Starc leading the bowling attack and injecting the firepower adds to KKR's capabilities.

In fact, KKR emerged from the auction with a total of 10 players - the most in IPL 2024. KKR's 10 buys included four overseas talents, among whom Starc stands out.

KKR made a bold move by shelling out the record sum for Starc, whose name on the roster comes at a staggering cost,

History is peppered with instances where big-ticket players like Yuvraj Singh, Chris Morris, Kevin Pietersen and Ben Stokes failed to live up to the expectations.

The burden of justifying the price tag falls squarely on Starc's shoulders. While his track record in international cricket is commendable, adapting to the demands of IPL is a different ball game altogether. Factors like adjusting to different conditions, the competitive nature of the league and handling the weight of expectations will determine the success of his stint with KKR.

Only time will tell if Starc's acquisition for the record price was a masterstroke or a gamble that didn't quite pay off for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Centre Bans Anti-Cold Fixed Drug Combination In Children Below 4 Years

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has prohibited the use of anti-cold fixed drug combinations in children below four years of age.

Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Rajeev Raghuvanshi asked the drug regulators of all states and Union territories to instruct the manufacturers of fixed drug combination (FDC) of Chlorpheniramine Maleate IP 2mg Phenylephrine HCL IP 5mg drop/ml to insert warning that "FDC should not be used in children below four years of age" on label and package insert/promotional literature of the drug.

In the letter, the DCGI stated that the FDC was declared as rational by the Professor Kokate Committee, and based on its recommendation, this office had issued NOC for continued manufacturing and marketing of the FDC on July 17, 2015, under the 18-month policy decision.

"Subsequently concerns have been raised regarding the promotion of unapproved anti-cold drug formulation for infants," he said.

The matter was deliberated in the Subject Expert Committee (SEC- Pulmonary) meeting held on June 6.

"The committee recommended that the FDC should not be used in children below four years of age and accordingly the firms should mention warnings in this regard on label and package insert. The recommendation of the SEC has been considered by this office," the letter stated.

"Accordingly, you are requested to direct all the manufacturers of said FDC under your jurisdiction to mention the warning 'FDC should not be used in children below 4 years of age' on the label and package insert/promotional literature of the drug," according to the DCGI's letter dated December 18.

Case Against Air Force Officer For Raping, Threatening 24-Year-Old Woman

The Delhi Police has booked an IAF officer for allegedly raping and intimidating a 24-year-old woman, officials on Monday said.

The Delhi Police has registered an FIR under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and began the investigation into the matter.

"On September 23, last year, I came in contact with a 38-year-old Wing Commander and started talking with her. Last year, On November 12, he forcefully sexually abused her in Delhi after making false promises of marriage," read the FIR, PTI has a copy of the FIR.

The complainant told the Parliament Street police station on December 1 that the accused told her that he liked her a lot and wanted to get married to her.

"Despite repeatedly telling him, he continued to establish a physical relationship with me. I protested as everything was wrong and he must wait until we were married. He paid no heed and took me to his residence as well, where I met his parents," read the FIR.

She also told the police that the accused had lied to her about his marital status and family.

Naveen-Ul-Haq Handed Big Ban From Marquee T20 Event. Here's The Reason

Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq was on Monday handed a 20-month ban from participating in the International League T20 for breaching his Player Agreement with Sharjah Warriors. Naveen had signed up for the Warriors for the opening season of the tournament. He was offered another year's extension but refused to sign the retention notice for Season 2. Sharjah Warriors approached the ILT20 to intervene in this dispute. The ILT20 first initiated a mediation process through an independent third-party mediator. However, the mediation failed.

The ILT20's three-member Disciplinary Committee, which includes the league's Chief Executive Officer David White, Head of Security and Anti-Corruption Col. Azam and Member Emirates Cricket Board Zayed Abbas, separately heard both the parties and on examining the evidence before them conveyed its final verdict of a 20-month ban on Naveen.

"We do not take pride in making this announcement but all parties are expected to comply with their contractual commitments and recognise that non-compliance can cause damage to the other party," CEO DP World ILT20 David White said in a release.

"Unfortunately, Naveen-ul-Haq failed to honour his contractual obligations with the Sharjah Warriors and as such the league had no option but to impose this 20-month ban on him.

"The disciplinary proceedings against Naveen were conducted in a transparent manner and both parties involved were given opportunities to prepare and present their submissions."

21 Bombs Planted Along Under-Construction Road Recovered In Chhattisgarh

Security forces on Saturday recovered 21 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by Maoists along an under-construction road in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said.

The IEDs with pressure mechanisms were planted between Palnar and Saavnar villages where road construction is underway, a police official said.

A joint team of District Reserve Guard, Bastar Fighters, which are units of the state police, the Central Reserve Police Force's 85th battalion and 222nd battalion, which included bomb disposal squads, the elite CoBRA's 202nd battalion, and district police had launched an operation from their newly-set up Palnar camp to trace landmines, he said.

"During the operation, 21 pressure IEDs planted along the under-construction road at separate places were recovered. A major mishap has been averted. The IEDs weigh between 3 to 5 kilograms and were placed beneath the earth near the trees in a bid to harm patrolling security personnel," he added.

"In another incident in the district, security forces busted a Maoist transit camp in a forest near Pedda Korma village under Gangaloor police station limits following an encounter with Naxalites," an official said.

"We recovered explosives and other materials. The face-off took place at around 8 am when a joint team of DRG, Bastar Fighters, CRPF, and its elite unit CoBRA were out on an operation acting on inputs about the presence of leaders belonging to the Naxalites' Gangaloor area committee," he said.

After the exchange of fire stopped, a cache of explosives, medicines, Maoist literature, uniforms, and items of daily use were recovered from the hideout, the official informed.

"Surya's Batting": Kuldeep's "Birthday Gift" Response After India's Win

Wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav became a hero on Thursday as his five-wicket haul helped India defeat South Africa by 106 runs in the third T20I. With this win, India ended the three-match T20I series with 1-1 draw. Asked to bat first, the visitors posted a whopping total of 201/7 in 20 overs with skipper Suryakumar Yadav smashing 100 off 56 balls. Later, South Africa were bundled out for 95 after Kuldeep scalped five wickets. Co-incidentally, there was another reason for Kuldeep to celebrate as it was his 29th birthday.

After the match ended in India's favor, Kuldeep was asked to choose his birthday gift from the five wickets that he scalped. However, the spinner came up with a heart-winning response.

"I think it was Surya bhai's batting. That was the biggest gift. He batted brilliantly. The way he was batting was great to watch because the pitch was not that easy for batting. It was really a treat to watch him bat. It turned out to be a special day. I have never thought about taking five wickets," Kuldeep said during the post-match press conference.

"I just wanted the team to win which is more important. I was concerned about my bowling because I was playing after some time, so wanted to get my rhythm. It was perfect today. The ball was coming out well from the hand and the conditions too suited the spinners a bit," he added.

Kuldeep last played in South Africa in 2018 but a knee injury in 2021, for which he underwent surgery, halted his career for 6-7 months.

However, he successfully returned back to the field with a new technique.

"In 2018, I was very new and after that, couple of years I struggled with my injury and post surgery I came back and made a few changes in my bowling, especially in my run-up. Trying to be more aggressive and just trying to bowl much straighter and focusing on length," Kuldeep said.

India-Made High-Speed Drone Successfully Flight Tested In Karnataka

The Defence Ministry on Friday said a successful flight trial of an indigenous high-speed flying-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was carried out in Karnataka's Chitradurga that propelled India into an elite club of nations to have the technology to produce such a platform.

The autonomous flying wing technology demonstrator has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

"The DRDO has successfully carried out a flight trial of autonomous flying wing technology demonstrator, an indigenous high-speed flying-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) from the aeronautical test range in Chitradurga," the ministry said.

The successful flying demonstration of this autonomous stealth UAV is a testimony to maturity in the technology readiness levels in the country, it said.

"With this flight in the tailless configuration, India has joined the elite club of countries to have mastered the controls for the flying wing technology," the Defence Ministry said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has complimented the DRDO, the armed forces and the industry for the successful flight trial of the system. He said the successful development of such critical technologies indigenously will further strengthen the armed forces.

This UAV is designed and developed by DRDO's Aeronautical Development Establishment.

The ministry said the maiden flight of this aircraft was demonstrated in July 2022, followed by six flight trials in various developmental configurations using two in-house manufactured prototypes.

"These flight tests led to achievements in the development of robust aerodynamic and control system; integrated real-time and hardware-in-loop simulation, and state-of-the-art ground control stations," it said.

"The team had optimised the avionic systems, integration and flight operations towards the successful seventh flight in the final configuration," the ministry added.

The aircraft prototype, with a complex arrowhead wing platform, is designed and manufactured with lightweight carbon prepreg composite material developed indigenously.

"Also, the composite structure, impregnated with fibre interrogators for health monitoring, is a showcase of 'Aatmanirbharta' in aerospace technology," the ministry said.

"The autonomous landing of this high-speed UAV, without the need for ground radars/infrastructure/pilot, showcased a unique capability demonstration, allowing take-off and landing from any runway with surveyed coordinates," it said.

The ministry said this was possible using onboard sensor data fusion with indigenous satellite-based augmentation using GPS-aided GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) receivers to improve the accuracy and integrity of GPS navigation. PTI MPB NSD NSD

PCB Says It Has Signed Hosting Rights Agreement Of CT 2025 With ICC

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday said it signed the hosting rights agreement of the 2025 Champions Trophy with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in Dubai. The agreement for the 2025 mega event was signed by Zaka Ashraf who heads the Cricket Management Committee running the PCB affairs at the moment. "Chairman PCB Management Committee Mr Zaka Ashraf was joined by ICC General Counsel Jonathan Hall in the signing of the hosting rights to Pakistan at the ICC headquarters," the PCB said in a statement. Pakistan last hosted an ICC event in 1996 -- the ODI World Cup. Pakistan was guaranteed to host the 2009 Champions Trophy and also matches of the 2011 World Cup at home but the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in March 2009 in Lahore led to both events being moved from the country due to security concerns.

The biggest challenge surrounding Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy remains whether the Indian government would allow its team to travel to Pakistan for its matches.

The PCB had to agree to a hybrid model of the Asia Cup in August-September and share matches with Sri Lanka after the BCCI said its team would not play in Pakistan due to security concerns.

Pakistan did host the 2008 Asia Cup in entirety and that was the last time India played in Pakistan.

The PCB said in a statement that it has already conveyed to the government to provide foolproof security to visiting international teams for the Champions Trophy.

"The PCB in its capacity has already intimated the government to provide foolproof security to visiting international teams for the Champions Trophy," the PCB statement added.

"Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar in a recent meeting with Chairman PCB Management Committee assured the security agencies' cooperation in the successful hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025." Another logistical problem facing the PCB would be to get its existing international venues renovated and ready for the matches of the mega event.

Presently, only Karachi, Lahore and Multan have stadiums capable of hosting Champions Trophy games.

More than 2,000 children have been adopted by Indians in the financial year 2023-24 so far while 224 children have been adopted by foreigners, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani informed the Parliament on Wednesday.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Ms Irani said the Women and Child Development Ministry had notified Adoption Regulations, 2022, which have been framed in line with the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 (as amended in 2021), on September 23 last year.

The Adoption Regulations were framed keeping in mind the issues and challenges faced by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) and other stakeholders, including the Adoption Agencies and Prospective Adoptive Parents (PAPs), she said.

According to the data shared by the minister, 3,142 children were adopted by Indians and 417 by foreigners in 2020-21, 2,991 by Indians and 414 by foreigners in 2021-22, and 3,010 by Indians and 431 by foreigners in 2022-23.

In 2023-24, 2,248 children had been adopted by Indians and 224 by foreigners till December 12, the data showed.

CARA has developed CARINGS, an online adoption platform for building bridges and creating links through a robust web-based management system designed to bring transparency in the adoption system and curtail delays at various levels. The CARINGS portal has been further simplified, Ms Irani said.

"Proud I'm Indian, Muslim": Shami On Gesture After 5-Wicket World Cup Haul

Mohammed Shami took the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 by storm, quite literally. The fast bowler missed the first four matches that the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team played, but still took 24 wickets in seven matches - the most by anyone in 2023 edition. The 33-year-old pacer from Uttar Pradesh took three five-wicket hauls. Among the many records that he broke during the course of the World Cup, one that stood out was the seven-wicket haul that he took against New Zealand in the semi-final. It's the best-ever figures by an Indian in ODI cricket.

However, there was one social media storm that brewed after India's match against Sri Lanka, where Mohammed Shami took a five-wicket haul. After he took the fifth wicket at the Wankhede stadium in the round-robin stage match, he kneeled on the ground. Some social media users took the gesture in a different way and made an issue out of it. Mohammed Shami was asked about the same in an interview on Wednesday.

"There was one match where you took five wickets and then kneeled on the ground. Then from Pakistan, on social media, there came posts that said 'Mohammed Shami is an Indian Muslim. He wants to do Sajda (prayer), but he was afraid to do it in India'" the anchor asked Mohammed Shami on Aaj Tak.

Mohammed Shami's reply was quite straightforward. "If somebody wants to do Sajda, who will stop? I will not stop anybody from your religion, you will not stop anybody from my religion. If I have to do Sajda, I will do it. What is the problem? I say it with pride that I am Muslim. I am an Indian, I say it with pride that I am an Indian," he replied.

"If I had an issue, I wouldn't have lived in India. If I need to take anyone's permission to do Sajda, why should I live here. I have also seen those comments on social media. Have I ever done Sajda on the ground? I have taken five wickets before also, but have I ever done Sajda. If I have to do Sajda, tell me where to do it, I will do it."

Mohammed Shami added that such people, who try to create unnecessary controversy, should be avoided.  He also revealed the real reason why he kneeled down on the ground.

"I will do it on every stage in India. Nobody can stop me. These people try to create disturbance. These people are neither with me nor you. They don't love anybody. They just need content. I kneeled down as I was bowling beyond my effort. I was tired. People took the gesture in a different way," Shami said.

Mohammed Shami is currently going through medical treatment and is expected to join the Indian cricket team for the Test series in South Africa, that starts on December 26.

Mohammed Shami is in the running to receive the Arjun Award, according to a report in news agency PTI. Shami's name has been recommended for this year's prestigious Arjuna award by the selection committee after his spectacular performance in the cricket World Cup 2023.

'Hand Them To Hindus': RSS Leader's Big Remark On Disputed Religious Sites

Muslims and people belonging to other religions should voluntarily hand over all disputed religious sites to the Hindu community, senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar said.

In an interview with PTI, he said Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat was very clear when he said "there is no need to find Shivling in every mosque".

"Bhagwat's statement was aimed at putting an end to mutual conflict so that society can think and reflect while being free from hatred and violence,"  Mr Kumar said.

Indresh Kumar, who is the RSS' national executive member and patron of the Muslim Rashtriya Manch, said temples belonging to the followers of 'Sanatan' were demolished by foreign invaders.

"What Mohan Bhagwat said is very clear. There is no need to search, the truth is in front of everyone. Everyone should accept that truth," he said "Muslims and people belonging to other religions should come forward and hand over the disputed religious places of Hindus to the Hindu community," Mr Kumar added.

Indresh Kumar said there is an atmosphere of happiness not only in the country but across the world with the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

"Ram temple is for everyone...Ram temple (Ayodhya) is a national temple. Ram is for all and in everyone. India is a nation which accepts and respects all religions. Therefore, it is (right) to call it (Ram Temple) a national temple," he said.

Tamil Nadu Hospital Under Fire For Handing Over Baby's Body In Box

The mortuary at a government hospital here handed over the body of a baby in a cardboard carton much to the shock of the father, who struggled in vain to save his child during the floods last week.

The incident drew spontaneous criticism from several quarters prompting the hospital authorities to suspend a staff at the mortuary for negligence.

A senior official at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital on Monday said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

"I accepted the corpse given to me in a cardboard box on December 10 and took it to be laid to rest at the mosque with the help of volunteers," Masood Basha of Pulianthope said.

As he opened the box to bury the body he was shocked to see the stillborn child without being wrapped in a white shroud. "I had to obtain a white cloth, wrapped the body, and laid her to rest," Basha said.

A traumatised Basha said, "I couldn't save her... I didn't have the money to even bury the child. I cannot blame anyone except my misfortune."

Recalling his efforts to save his child, he told media that his wife Sowmya developed preterm labour pains on December 6 at 11 am. He couldn't manage to get an ambulance to rush his wife to a hospital due to inundation and poor mobile connectivity, he said.

By the time he could arrange a vehicle to take her to a hospital, his wife delivered a stillborn baby at home. His initial attempt to seek medical assistance from a private hospital did not yield any result due to power failure.

He managed to take the mother and baby to the Kilpauk Medical College hospital with the help of the police. At the GH, the doctors confirmed that a stillborn girl child was delivered, and later sent the body to the mortuary.

Slamming the ruling DMK for the negligence, BJP Tamil Nadu chief K Annamalai said the once sought-after medical infrastructure in the country has today hit rock bottom under the DMK rule.

There were no ambulances to take his wife to the hospital on time and later, the body of his baby were handed over in a carton box by a Government Hospital in Chennai, he said.

"The State Government should realise that brushing this aside by announcing compensation or a namesake suspension is not an answer to the agony faced by people dependent on Government hospitals, and constructive steps to improve medical infra are the need of the hour," Mr Annamalai said in a post on the social media platform X.

"Hope He Will Play In IPL": Sourav Ganguly's Big Wish For Indian Cricketer

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday said he wants to help Tripura to flourish in cricket, besides promoting the state's tourism sector as its brand ambassador. Addressing a press conference, he said he follows Tripura's cricket players and is impressed with Manisankar Murasingh. "I am a cricketer and want to help the state cricket body. I want the state to build a stadium to host big matches. If Guwahati can host India team's matches, why can't Tripura?" he asked.

"I follow the players who are playing for Tripura, and I am impressed by the way Manisankar Murasingh plays in various tournaments. I hope he will play in IPL," said the former BCCI president.

Notably, Manisankar's name was absent from the IPL 2024 Player Auction list.

Ganguly signed an agreement with state Tourism Minister Sushant Chowdhury at the Ujjyanta Palace. As part of the agreement, he will be the brand ambassador of Tripura Tourism.

"I am really honoured to be the brand ambassador of Tripura. I agreed to the offer when Chowdhury first approached me in June. The northeastern state has a lot to offer to the tourists," he said.

"I am here after 35 years and witnessed a lot of development. I am really impressed by the beauty of the Ujjyanta Palace. We will work together to promote the state's tourism sector not only nationally but also globally," he added.

Ganguly is scheduled to visit Chhabimura in the Gomati district and shoot an advertisement there. He will also meet Chief Minister Manik Saha.

When asked about his commitment to West Bengal, his home state that has also appointed him as its brand ambassador, Ganguly said, "Why I shall not be able to perform my assigned tasks?" Chowdhury said that his government was trying to promote tourism in a big way.

"With Saurav Ganguly joining us as the brand ambassador, the sector will touch a new high," he said.

Driver Of School Van Rapes 7-Year-Old Girl In Jaipur, Arrested

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man driving her to a private school here, police said on Sunday.

The accused was arrested after the minor's family registered a complaint in the three-month-old incident on Friday, they said.  The accused, Abdul Majid, 55, who operates a school van was arrested on Saturday, SHO Kishan Lal said.

The family have also named the school's owner and the principal in the FIR alleging they did not take action against the driver, police said. The family also alleged that the driver had threatened the girl's brother at knifepoint, Lal said.

The SHO said the incident happened nearly three months ago but there is no clarity over the place where the alleged incident happened. An FIR under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was lodged at the Jhotwara police station on Friday.

The matter is being investigated, the SHO said.

1st T20I Between India, South Africa Washed Out Without Toss Due To Rain

India's desire to start the process of finding an ideal combination for the T20 World Cup 2024 suffered a minor dent as their first match against South Africa was abandoned without a ball being bowled after persistent rain in Durban on Sunday. In fact, even the toss did not take place. Now, the 'Men in Blue' are left with just five T20Is - two more against the Proteas and three games against Afghanistan at home in January - ahead of next year's showpiece in the West Indies and the USA.

In that context, India would have liked to make a head start to their search for a perfect blend at Kingsmead but rain put paid to those hopes temporarily.

With the IPL 2024 preceding the T20 World Cup, the Indian think-tank will certainly bank on the league to identify the ideal 15 for the marquee event.

India stand-in captain Suryakumar suggested as much.

"I feel there are limited T20s going forward, before the T20 World Cup. But then we play 14 league games in the IPL as well," Suryakumar had mentioned during his pre-match press meet on Saturday.

But then nothing really can supplant the confidence a player can accrue while performing well in international matches, and the weight of a good outing doubles if the touring destination is South Africa.

It also offers the management a more realistic yardstick about a player's ability.

The first-time visitors to the 'Rainbow Nation' such as Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Arshdeep Singh etc would have been eager to get that unique taste of cricket here and now they would have to wait till Tuesday for the second match at St George's Park at Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth.

From a leadership perspective, Suryakumar has done a very fine job while stepping in for injured Hardik Pandya during the home T20I series against the Aussies.

Suryakumar led from the front in India's 4-1 series victory.

The 33-year-old would have liked to make a winning start here against the Proteas to underline his credentials to give the bigwigs another name potentially to consider for the captain's role, if it ever comes to that.

It wasn't entirely amusing then to hear the Mumbai man talking about his comfort while shepherding a young side.

"From personal point of view, it (captaincy) is a big responsibility. I really enjoyed it in the last series (against Australia). I would love to do the same (winning the series) in the coming series in South Africa.

"But from a larger perspective, we'll see what comes ahead but for now let's focus on the series," he had said on Saturday.

The Durban T20I could also have handed India a chance to test their options for the sixth bowler slot, something that assumes importance as Pandya's fitness continues to be iffy.

They, perhaps, could have tried the part-time spin of Tilak Varma, who recently bowled a few overs for Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Suryakumar did not provide a definite answer to the sixth bowling conundrum, but said they have enough personnel in their ranks to fill in that role.

"It is not like we don't have a sixth bowling option. When the right time comes, you will see the sixth bowler or maybe the seventh or eighth (bowler)," he had said.

But for now, India will have to hit the meeting room and reinforce their plans ahead of the second match.

KCR Unanimously Elected Leader Of BRS Legislature Party In Telangana

Former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) was on Saturday elected as legislature party leader by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLAs.

The BRS Legislative Party met at Telangana Bhavan and unanimously elected KCR as their leader in the newly-elected assembly.

The meeting, chaired by BRS Parliamentary Party leader K Keshava Rao, saw former Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy proposing Chandrashekhar Rao's name and former ministers T Srinivas Yadav and Kadiyam Srihari supporting it.

The meeting unanimously passed a resolution entrusting the responsibility of selecting the rest of the office-bearers on KCR.

KCR has undergone a successful hip surgery. BRS lost the assembly polls earlier this month with the Congress forming its first government in the southern state, which is also India's youngest.

BRS had been in power for the past 10 years.

Dhaka Pitch Labelled "Worst Wicket" By New Zealand Captain Tim Southee

New Zealand Test skipper Tim Southee slammed the pitch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka and called the wicket the "worst" he has seen in his career after Blackcaps tied the two-match Test series with Bangladesh. Thirty batters were dismissed by spinners as 36 wickets fell in 178.1 overs of play - the third-lowest number of balls bowled in a Test (1069) for that many wickets to fall - and Southee felt the pitch was far too friendly to bowlers, creating an uneven contest.

"It is probably the worst wicket I've come across in my career. The balance between bat and ball was heavily favoured in the bowler's hands. I think for the match to be over in 170 overs sort of reflects that. So, for our guys to scrap away and then come away with the win was a big pleasure," Southee was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"I think it was just a scrappy Test match. It was a tough wicket. Runs were hard to come by, and just those little moments and partnerships throughout were crucial, whereas, in other matches, I guess when conditions are a little bit more even between bat and ball, they don't get noticed as much," he added.

"When we play Tests, we are not here to improve. This is not a place for practice. We are trying to win the Test. We must prepare to win the Test, but we should take this type of advantage. We can prepare in first-class cricket by trying out good wickets. We should prepare wickets like these and wickets like away conditions in NCL [National Cricket League] or BCL [Bangladesh Cricket League]," Shanto said.

When asked if the pitch in Sylhet for the first Test, which extended into the final day, gave the squad a "home advantage," Shanto pointed out that bowlers suffered there.

"It wasn't a very helpful wicket for bowlers in Sylhet. Bowlers had to work hard for their wickets. There was a bit of help for both bowlers and batters. We didn't bat well in Dhaka. We should have scored 230-240 runs in the first innings. The wicket seemed bad because we got 172. New ball was a challenge, but that's also true anywhere around the world. It wasn't anything different here, but we could have avoided this situation if we batted better in the first innings," he said.

New Zealand levelled the two-match Test series against Bangladesh by clinching victory in the second game within four days on Saturday at the Shere Bangla National Stadium and the Test series on 1-1 scoreline.

Glenn Phillps once again stole the show with the bat scoring 40* off 48 balls and stitching a crucial unbeaten 70-run partnership with Mitchell Santner. The Tigers began the day with a score of 38/2 with the spinner duo of Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner combining to scalp eight.

The 35-year-old left-arm orthodox ended the second innings with six wickets while Santner added three wickets to his kitty. Zakir Hasan's 59 propelled Bangladesh to a score of 144 in 35 overs. New Zealand had a slender lead of 8 runs after the end of the first innings, as a result, the Kiwis set out to chase a target of 137.

India Biennale Kicks Off At Red Fort, 7 Themes For 7 Days

The maiden India Art, Architecture and Design Biennale celebrating the rich tapestry of the country's artistic and cultural heritage kicked off at the historic Red Fort complex here on Friday evening with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating it.

Prior to the inauguration ceremony, the prime minister also visited some of the thematic pavilions set up in three British-era barracks of the Red Fort.

Large biennale banners have been put up at the venue, which has been decked up colourfully.

From ornate doors to magnificent ancient temples and from heritage stepwells to rich textile designs, the art and architectural legacy of India have been showcased at the biennale.

Seven "specially curated" thematic pavilions have been set up in the three barracks - A1, A2 and B4 - that have been refurbished for the event.

The seven-day India Art, Architecture and Design Biennale (IAADB), helmed by the Union Culture Ministry, will open to the public from December 9. And, while the biennale will end on December 15, the exhibitions will continue till March 31 next year.

Each day of the event has a different theme that will be complemented by "exclusively curated exhibitions" for which "seven distinguished curators have been onboarded", a senior official had earlier said.

The seven themes are 'Doors of India', 'Gardens of India', 'Baolis of India', 'Temples of India', 'Architectural Wonders of Independent India', 'Indigenous Design' and 'Women in Architecture and Design' and have been named as 'Pravesh', 'Bagh-e-Bahar', 'Sampravah', 'Sthapaya', 'Vismaya', 'Deshaj' and 'Samatva'.

In his nearly 25-minute address, the Prime Minister underlined the country's rich ancient history in art, culture and architecture, which has drawn people to India from around the world.

India's vibrant culture and ancient heritage sites attract tourists from all over the world, he said.

"Today, with the sentiment of 'taking pride in our heritage' (virasat par gaurav), the country is again taking it forward… In 'Azadi ka Amrit Kaal', India is charting new dimensions in cultural prosperity, and taking concrete steps for it. This biennale being held in India is another great step in that direction," Modi said.

In his opening remarks, Modi said, "This Red Fort itself is very historic. This Red Fort is not just a building, but it is history. It has been steady from before Independence and since. I welcome you all to this World Heritage Site." The biennale is being helmed by the Ministry of Culture which earlier this year had also organised the International Museum Expo and the Festival of Libraries.

Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Culture Meenakashi Lekhi, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and noted architect Diana Kellogg were also present on the dais.

Kellogg, in her address, called the biennale an "unprecedented initiative" by the Indian government, and said that society must work to create a "luminous future" based on holistic ideas of sustainability where everyone is treated equally.
