West Indies Fight Back After Aiden Markram Century For South Africa

Aiden Markram hit a century on his return to Test cricket but the West Indies mounted a strong fightback on the first day of the first Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park on Tuesday. Markram made 115 in a South Africa total of 314 for eight. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph spearheaded the West Indian bowling attack, taking three for 60. South Africa looked set to take full control when they reached 221 for one after new captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided to bat.

But they lost seven more wickets before the close while adding another 93 runs, with the West Indian bowlers finding swing, lateral movement and more consistency with the old ball.

An opening partnership of 141 between Markram and former captain Dean Elgar (71) was followed by a stand of 80 between Markram and new cap Tony de Zorzi. The left-handed De Zorzi was looking comfortable before he was run out for 28.

De Zorzi punched a ball from Joseph through the covers and completed a confortable two runs.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul made a good sliding stop and De Zorzi was sent back after setting off for an unlikely third.

Chanderpaul's throw was off target but wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva cleverly flicked the ball into the stumps.

Bavuma, on his first appearance as South Africa's first Black African captain, was leg before wicket for nought to a full ball from Joseph two balls later and Joseph struck again when he yorked Markram.

Markram was dropped last year after a poor run of form in which he went 15 innings without a half-century, with only two scores above 30. He had not made a hundred since scoring 108 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi in February 2021.

After a watchful start, he was soon into his stride, hitting 18 fours in a 174-ball innings, studded by his trademark cover drives and powerful pull shots.

Elgar, who was stripped of the captaincy after South Africa were heavily beaten on tours of England and Australia, made 71 off 118 balls.

Two of Elgar's 11 fours were ramp shots over the slips but in trying to hit a third boundary in that fashion he fell to a leaping catch by Jermaine Blackwood at third man off Joseph.

Blackwood earlier put down a sharp chance at third slip off Kyle Mayers when he was on 10.

The South African team showed five changes from the side that played in the third Test of a losing series in Australia in January with De Zorzi and fast bowler Gerald Coetzee both handed their first caps.

The West Indies made one change from the side that beat Zimbabwe by an innings and four runs in Bulawayo earlier this month.

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who took 13 wickets in the win in Bulawayo, had a back injury and was replaced by fast bowler Kemar Roach.

Bail Plea Of Hemant Soren's Aide Rejected In Jharkhand Illegal Mining Case

The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Pankaj Mishra, the former political representative of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, in a money laundering case related to illegal mining.

Mr Mishra was arrested in July last year by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Justice Gautam Kumar Choudhary dismissed Mr Mishra's bail application after hearing arguments in the case.

The ED had filed a charge sheet against Mr Mishra and his two aides -- Bachhu Yadav and Prem Prakash -- on September 16 last year before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ranchi.

"PMLA investigation revealed that Pankaj Mishra, who enjoys political clout, being the representative of the Chief Minister, MLA from Barhait, Sahibganj, Jharkhand controls the illegal mining businesses as well as inland ferry services in Sahibganj and its adjoining areas through his accomplices," the ED had alleged in a statement earlier.

"He exercises considerable control over the mining of stone chips and boulders as well as installation and operations of several crushers, set up across various mining sites in Sahibganj," the statement had claimed.

It had said proceeds of crime amounting to about Rs 42 crore "acquired" by Mr Mishra have been identified.

The agency had also claimed that it has "identified" proceeds of crimes, relating to illegal mining in the state, to the tune of more than Rs 1,000 crore.

The ED filed a case under the PMLA against Mr Mishra in March last year, alleging that he "illegally grabbed or amassed huge assets in his favour".

It took cognisance of a state police FIR filed against Mr Mishra at Barharwa police station in Sahibganj district, and some other police complaints filed in illegal mining trade instances under various sections of the Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act, among others.

How AAP Will Divide Up Manish Sisodia's 18 Portfolios

The 18 portfolios of the Delhi government handled by Manish Sisodia will be divided among two ministers of the Delhi government for now, sources have told NDTV. Kailash Gahlot and Raaj Kumar Anand will each be in charge of two signature portfolios of Mr Sisodia, sources said.

Mr Anand will be looking after the showcase departments of Education and Health, which the Aam Aadmi Party considers its crown jewels.

Kailash Gehlot, one of the senior members of Arvind Kejriwal's cabinet, will be in charge of the vital power and water departments. AAP's delivery on its promise of free power and water in Delhi is seen as a key aspect of its sweeping victory in Punjab.

He will also oversee finance, the most crucial department ahead of the Delhi budget due in March.

Mr Sisodia, arrested in connection with the alleged liquor scam in Delhi, stepped down as a minister today. So did another Delhi minister, Satyendar Jain, who has been in jail for around eight months.

Before quitting, Mr Sisodia was handling 18 of Delhi's 33 ministries, including health, which was the responsibility of Satyendar Jain till his arrest.

Party sources said there will be no addition to the cabinet till the Delhi budget is presented next month.

Sources say Mr Gahlot will take over eight portfolios that also include Home, Urban Development, Planning, Public works Department, Irrigation and Flood Control. Mr Anand's share includes Land and Building, Vigilance, Services, Tourism, Art Culture and Language, Labour, Employment and Industries.

The AAP government had started out with seven ministers, and now has only five. Mr Kejriwal, the face of the party and the government, has not handled any department so far.

There is speculation that the crunch might tie him up with governance in Delhi ahead of a string of state elections this year and the general elections the next.

AAP, which got the national party status with last year's Gujarat elections, was planning to contest in Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Mr Sisodia faces corruption allegations in connection with a new liquor sale policy in 2021. The CBI contends that liquor companies were involved in framing of the policy, for which kickbacks to the tune of Rs 30 crore were paid by a liquor lobby it dubbed the "South Group".

The policy would have led to a 12 per cent profit for them, of which 6 per cent was routed to public servants through middlemen, the agency claimed.

"Many Manish Sisodias Behind Bars": Ashok Gehlot

A day after the CBI arrested Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday said "many Sisodias" have been arrested in the country but people don't get to know about them.

There is "terror" of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and Income Tax department in the country, while the judiciary and Election Commission are under pressure, he claimed.

Mr Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on Sunday evening in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22.

A special court in Delhi on Monday sent him to five-day CBI custody for effective interrogation to unravel the alleged scam.

"Many Sisodias have been arrested in the country," Mr Gehlot told reporters in Sikar in response to a question.

People don't find out about them. They found out about Mr Sisodia's arrest because he is a deputy chief minister, he said.

"There are many such instances where journalists, writers and litterateurs have been put behind bars. The general public will have to think about what is happening in the country," he said.

Delhi's ruling AAP claims Mr Sisodia is innocent and has been arrested due to political vendetta. The party on Monday staged protests across the country against Mr Sisodia's arrest.

Mr Gehlot further claimed there is "terror" of central probe agencies and an atmosphere of tension and violence prevails in the country.

"There is severe inflation, unemployment, an atmosphere of tension and violence in the country, there is terror of ED, Income Tax department and CBI. The judiciary and the Election Commission are under pressure and the gap between the rich and the poor is growing. These issues have shaken the whole country," the chief minister said.

"The government of India is not paying attention to this. All... issues are of great importance. It is its duty to pay attention to them when the Opposition raises them through dharnas, demonstrations and yatras ... like (Congress leader) Rahul Gandhi did," he said.

It is the country's misfortune that these "fascist" people, who have no faith in democracy, have formed the government by putting on the mask of democracy.

Referring to the Rajasthan government's Chiranjeevi Health Insurance Scheme and other welfare initiatives, Mr Gehlot said these measures are being discussed across the country and the state has set an example.

Australia Win Women's T20 World Cup For Sixth Time

Australia won the Women's T20 World Cup for the sixth time when they beat South Africa by 19 runs in the final at Newlands on Sunday. Opening batter Beth Mooney anchored the Australian innings, scoring an unbeaten 74 in a total of 156 for six. South Africa were never up with the required run rate and were restricted to 137 for six despite opener Laura Wolvaardt hitting 61 off 48 balls.

Wolvaardt and semi-final heroine Tazmin Brits struggled to find gaps in the field and scored only 17 runs before Brits was caught at mid-on off Darcie Brown off the last ball of the fifth over.

Marizanne Kapp hit two boundaries but was out for 11 and South Africa captain Sune Luus was run out for two. At that stage the home side needed another 103 runs off 56 balls.

Wolvaardt and the hard-hitting Chloe Tryon gave a near-capacity crowd of about 15,000 hope with an attacking fourth wicket partnership of 55 off 37 balls but the match was effectively over when Wolvaardt was leg before wicket to Megan Schutt in the 17th over.

The left-handed Mooney played a measured innings, scoring her 74 runs off 53 balls while a succession of partners batted aggressively.

Ash Gardner and Grace Harris both batted ahead of captain Meg Lanning and appeared to be under instructions to go for their shots.

South Africa's bowlers performed steadily and were backed up by enthusiastic fielding. Stalwarts Shabnim Ismail and Kapp both took two wickets each.

But Australia showed their quality in defending their total with athleticism and commitment that put the South African batters under constant pressure.

Arvind Kejriwal's First Big Challenge After Manish Sisodia's Arrest

The Arvind Kejriwal government is staring at a possible crisis with the CBI arresting Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who holds as many as 18 of the total 33 departments, including education, finance and home.

The arrest of Mr Sisodia comes after that of Satyendar Jain, Delhi's then health minister, in June last year. Both have led what the Aam Aadmi Party describes as the successful transformation of Delhi's education and health services, contributing to the party's popularity and continued electoral success.

Their absence leaves Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with no heavyweight lieutenant to implement his governance agenda in Delhi.

The immediate challenge for Mr Kejriwal is to present the Delhi government budget as scheduled and find Mr Sisodia's replacement.

Sources in the Aam Aadmi Party said Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot may present the Delhi government budget for the next financial year.

"As there was a possibility that the deputy chief minister may be arrested by the CBI, Mr Gahlot was attending budget-related meetings for the last few days.

"Gahlot is likely to present the 2023-24 budget. It is scheduled to be presented next month," an AAP functionary told PTI.

According to the Delhi government's websites, there are a total of 33 departments.

Of these, Mr Sisodia looks after 18, including health, education, public works department (PWD), services, finance, power, home and urban development. He is also in charge of all other departments not specifically allotted to any minister.

Apart from Mr Kejriwal, the Delhi government has six cabinet ministers, including jailed Satyendar Jain who is still a minister without a portfolio. Mr Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last year in connection with a money laundering case.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai has only three departments while Imran Hussain is in charge of only two departments -- food and civil supplies, and election.

Kailash Gahlot is in charge of six departments, including revenue, and transport while Raj Kumar Anand has four portfolios.

The CBI on Sunday evening arrested Mr Sisodia, who is close to Mr Kejriwal, in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22 after nearly eight hours of questioning.

This was the second round of questioning of Mr Sisodia after the agency registered a case on August 17 last year. He was quizzed on October 17 last year.

Mr Kejriwal termed the arrest "dirty politics" and asserted that his deputy was innocent.

"Manish is innocent. His arrest is dirty politics. It has angered people quite a lot. People are watching everything. People now understand everything and will give a reply to this. It will boost our spirit and our struggle will only get stronger," Mr Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.

Explained: Who Is Lovepreet Singh, Punjab Radical Leader's Aide Freed By Cops

Lovepreet Singh walked out of jail today after a pro-Khalistan organisation lay siege to Ajnala police station in Punjab's Amritsar. But who is he and who is the Amritpal Singh that led the group to Ajnala police station.

Who is Lovepreet Singh

Lovepreet Singh aka Toofan Singh belongs from Gurdaspur in Punjab. He was arrested for his connection in a kidnapping and assault case. Lovepreet Singh is also a part of Waris Punjab De, and a close aide of Waris Punjab De's chief Amritpal Singh.

Who is Amritpal Singh

Amritpal Singh is the chief of Waris Punjab De, a separatist organisation started by Deep Sidhu. Amritpal Singh returned from Dubai last year. He was recently made the head of Waris Punjab De at an event in Moga district, the village of Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale.

What happened on February 23 at Ajnala police station

After Lovepreet Singh's arrest on February 16, Amritpal Singh warned the police to release him, or else he would come with a huge crowd on February 23. Amritpal Singh's supporters started gathering in the morning at Ajnala station.

The police tried to stop them since they were low in number. Then Amritpal Singh reached Ajnala from Raia's village Jallupur Khera. In half an hour, the situation became such that the police were attacked with swords. Several policemen including senior officers, at Ajnala police post were taken over by Amritpal Singh and his supporters.

What did Punjab Police do

The Punjab Police decided to form a special investigative team to probe the first information report (FIR). Lovepreet Singh was released at 4 pm. "Want to ensure peace. It's hard-earned in Punjab," the Punjab Police chief said.

The whole incident has come at the time when Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been inviting investments to Punjab. This event is not the standalone incident of a separatist uprising in the state. There have been cases in the previous government as well. For now, the situation remains tricky for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab.

Brits, Khaka Lead Stunning South Africa Into Women's T20 World Cup Final

Tazmin Brits and Ayabonga Khaka inspired a shock six-run victory for South Africa against England in their Women's T20 World Cup semi-final at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday. Brits hit 68 in a South African total of 164 for four, then held four catches, two of them exceptional, as England were restricted to 158 for eight. South Africa will meet defending champions and heavy favourites Australia in the final at the same venue on Sunday.

Medium-pace bowler Khaka took three wickets in the 18th over to put the target just beyond England's reach.

Fast bowler Shabnim Ismail made the first two breakthroughs after England made a fast start, then bowled captain Heather Knight in the final over to snuff out England's last hope.

Laura Wolvaardt and Brits launched South Africa's best batting performance of the tournament.

They followed up their unbeaten century opening stand in the last group match against Bangladesh by putting on 96 for the first wicket in 13.4 overs.

Wolvaardt was the senior partner, striking five fours and a six in making 53 off 44 balls before she was caught at backward point off left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone.

Brits then took over, hitting powerfully to score 68 off 55 balls. She hit six fours as well as two sixes in the space of three deliveries from leg-spinner Sarah Glenn.

England's Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley raced to a 53-run opening stand in five overs before Ismail had Dunkley caught by Brits at midwicket for 28.

Two balls later Brits dived to take a sensational catch in the same position to dismiss Alice Capsey for nought.

Brits held another diving catch to dismiss Wyatt (34) at backward square leg and then calmly held a high hit from Nat Sciver-Brunt (40) at long-on.

Australia defeated India by five runs in another semi-final thriller on Thursday.

The protest led to a massive jam on the highway for around an hour but at length, police managed to control the situation and got the road cleared.

Earlier, some social organisations headed by former minister Azad Mohammad also submitted a memorandum to the Sub Divisional Magistrate of Firozpur Jhirka through Naib Tehsildar and demanded the arrest of the accused and a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Mohammad alleged that the incident was not an isolated one.

"The car which was found registered in the name of Panchayat Department Haryana has been used in the heinous murder of Nasir and Junaid," alleged the former minister.

'Cow vigilantes' are raising hell in the name of cow protection in the Mewat area, a few Congress MLAs from the Mewat area had alleged on Wednesday while speaking in the state assembly.

Nasir and Junaid, both residents of Ghatmeeka village in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes on February 15 and their bodies were found in a charred car in Loharu in Haryana's Bhiwani the next day. Their families had named five men allegedly linked to the Bajrang Dal in their complaint to the police.

After handing over the memorandum, the protesters shouted slogans against Bajrang Dal and Gau Raksha Dal Task Force and went to Ambedkar Chowk and completely blocked Delhi-Nuh-Alwar Road.

"As soon as we got information our police force reached the spot and opened the blocked road after some time. We are monitoring the situation closely to avoid these types of incidents," said Varun Singla, Superintendent of Police, Nuh.

Adani Group Sought 94,000 Square Metres Of Land In Gujarat For Township

The Gautam Adani group has sought 94,000 square metres of 'gauchar' (grazing land) and non-arable land from the Gujarat government to build a township and special economic zone, the state Assembly was informed on Friday.

Responding to a query raised by Aam Aadmi Party's Jamjodhpur MLA Hemant Ahir, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who handles the revenue portfolio, said the group had sought 93,900 square metres of land in Khodiyar village in Ahmedabad and Dantali village in Gandhinagar.

Bhupendra Patel, in his written reply, informed the House the Adani Group had sought this land in exchange for its own plots of equal area in these villages.

It has also sought 202 square metres of non-arable land in Jaspur village in Gandhinagar without this exchange mechanism, the Chief Minister said.

The Adani Group wants land in Ahmedabad district to "develop a Special Economic Zone as part of its state-of-the-art township" while land in Gandhinagar district has been sought for the purpose of a township, the Chief Minister said.

These demands are pending with the state government, Mr Patel added.

The Budget session of the Gujarat Assembly is currently underway.

"The Way I Got Runout...": Harmanpreet On India's T20 World Cup Heartbreak

The Indian women's cricket team fell at the penultimate hurdle as Australia book their seventh successive Women's T20 World Cup final spot. Despite a disappointing fielding performance, India did well with the bat in phases to come close to Australia's total of 172 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues kept India's hopes alive before the skipper got run out in the most bizarre fashion. When Harmanpreet was asked about her dismissal, she admitted that there can't be a more 'unlucky' way to get dismissed.

It was the 15th over of India's chase, with Harmapreet keeping the team afloat. During the 4the delivery of the over, Harmanpreet's bat got stuck into the ground while running. The batter was found just inches shy of her crease as the bails were dislodged.

The incident changed the momentum of the game, with Australia taking the driving seat.

Speaking of the incident, Harmanpreet said that she couldn't have been unluckier.

"Can't be unluckier than this, to get that momentum back when me and Jemi were batting. And to lose after that, we didn't expect this today. The way I got runout, can't be unluckier than that. Putting in the effort was more important. We discussed about fighting till the last ball. The result didn't go our way, but I am happy with the way we played in this tournament. We know we have a good batting line up even if we lose early wickets," she said.

Harmanpreet also credited Jemimah Rodrigues for her performance that saw her score a quick-fire 43 off 24.

"Need to give credit to Jemi for the way she batted today. She got us the momentum we were looking for. Happy to see such performances. Happy to see them play their natural game. We even though we didn't play to our strengths, we reached the semis," said the India captain.

At the end, Harmanpree also confessed that India were poor in the field.

"We gave those easy catches away. Got to take those when you want to win. We misfielded. We can only learn from these lessons and not repeat the mistakes," she concluded.

In Shiv Sena Row, Now Focus On Claim To Party Headquarters, Mouthpiece

With the Election Commission (EC) recognising Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's faction as the real Shiv Sena, now whether his group also stakes claim to the party headquarters 'Shiv Sena Bhavan' and party mouthpiece 'Saamana', both currently controlled by the Uddhav Thackeray camp.

While the Shiv Sena Bhavan is located at Dadar in central Mumbai, the 'Saamana' head office is situated in the nearby Prabhadevi area. Both these establishments are currently run by different trusts.

CM Shinde has maintained that he would not stake claim to the Shiv Sena Bhavan even though he has got the party name and symbol. However, the rival camp is wary and on guard. Recently, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader and Thane MP Rajan Vichare submitted a letter to Thane Police Commissioner Jai Jeet Singh, urging him to thwart any attempts by the Shinde group to usurp the Shiv Sena 'shakhas' (local party offices) in the city.

The EC last week recognised the Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena and allotted it the party's 'bow and arrow' symbol, giving a jolt to the Thackeray camp. Earlier, the Shinde group was officially referred to as 'Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena' and the Thackeray group as Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). The Supreme Court is hearing various petitions related to the tussle between the Shinde and Thackeray factions.

Due to the EC verdict, the Thackeray family lost control of the party that was founded in 1966 by Bal Thackeray. The party, founded on the principles of justice for the sons of the soil, had adopted Hindutva as its key ideology and partnered with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1984, an alliance that continued till 2019 when Uddhav Thackeray joined hands with arch-rivals Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress to become the chief minister.

The Shiv Sena Bhavan is controlled by 'Shivai Seva Trust'. Its founding trustees include late Bal Thackeray and his wife late Meena Thackeray. Many of the founding trustees are not alive now.

Its present trustees include senior leaders Subhash Desai, Diwakar Raote, Leeladhar Dake, former Mumbai mayor Vishaka Raut and Uddhav Thackeray himself.

While 'Saamana', the Shiv Sena mouthpiece founded by late Bal Thackeray, is managed by Prabhodhan Prakashan, whose printer-publisher is Thackeray loyalist Subhash Desai.

Uddhav Thackeray had resigned as the editor of 'Saamana' after assuming the chief minister's charge in November 2019. He had handed over the editor's post to his wife Rashmi Thackeray in March 2020. However, after the Shiv Sena split, Uddhav again took over as the editor in August 2022. Sanjay Raut is the executive editor of the party mouthpiece.

Senior journalist Prakash Akolkar, who has written 'Jai Maharashtra' - a book on Shiv Sena's history, said, "CM Shinde has taken a mature decision of not staking claim to the Shiv Sena Bhavan and Saamana as both these institutions are operated by private trusts. Staking claim to these establishments would lead to further legal complications. It is also his indirect message to supporters to exercise restraint." Harshal Pradhan, a close aide of Uddhav Thackeray, said there are 350 Shiv Sena 'shakhas' in Mumbai, while outside Mumbai there is one such unit in each municipal ward.

Shakhas are the premises where the Shiv Sainiks (party workers) gather for political meetings, resolving local issues of citizens.

Vaibhav Purandare, the author of 'Bal Thackeray and the Rise of the Shiv Sena' said, "As a political party, the Shiv Sena directly owns very few properties. Shiv Sena Bhavan and Saamana are owned by trusts. While most of the Shiv Sena shakhas are either owned by the 'shakha pramukhs' or by private individuals who have given their property to set up these offices. It is up to these individuals to decide which way to go."

"Don't Let Outsiders Impose Citizenship Law": Mamata Banerjee In Meghalaya

In a veiled attack on the BJP at an election rally in Meghalaya, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said her party will not allow people coming from outside to impose CAA and NRC on residents of the northeastern state.

She accused the Conrad Sangma government in the state of not undertaking development work and being involved in various scandals.

“Outsiders want to rule here while oppressing you with National Register of Citizens, the Citizenship Amenment Act, bullets and scandals. Do not tolerate this. Don't allow people coming from outside the state to impose CAA or NRC on you," she said addressing a poll rally in western Meghalaya.

"Meghalaya will be run by its people and not from Guwahati or Delhi. We (TMC) won't run it from Bengal. We are your friends and will help you with whatever you need,” Ms Banerjee said..

Slamming the state and central governments for the Mukroh violence, the TMC supremo said, “The Assam police fired at the people according to its own whims. Why were no central teams sent to investigate such an incident?” At Mukroh in Meghalaya six people - five from the state and a forest guard from Assam were killed on November 22 in firing by the Assam police.

Central teams are dispatched to Bengal "for the smallest of things" but nothing was done at Mukroh. “Shots were fired in (inter state) border areas. So many people died. But the (BJP) leaders did not come to see the devastation,” she said.

Criticising the alleged "divisive propaganda" of BJP, Banerjee said “Our biggest identity is that we are humans and love humanity. We (TMC) respect all religions. I believe my first and foremost duty is to be with the people. No religion is bigger than the religion of humanity and standing by the people.” She ueged the people to oust both BJP and the Congress which have been in power in Meghalaya for many years but have denied its people of their right to development.

“They (BJP and Congress) were in power for so many years, but could not even build roads in Meghalaya. No medical colleges, no good roads and no system for healthcare facilities either. There was no development, only scandals,” she said and asked the people to vote in her party's favour in the February 27 state election.

"TMC can develop Meghalaya .... Change this government for there is nothing here. No development, but only scandals,” she said.

A number of scandals have rocked Meghalaya for the past few years. They include the illegal coal mining and public distribution system scams. The state leader of opposition Mukul Sangma, who is also the face of TMC in Meghalaya, had on Tuesday alleged a Rs 140 crore land scam in Shillong in which Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his cabinet ministers are allegedly involved.

Slamming the NPP-led government for the scams, she appealed to the people to punish it by voting against it.

“It is time to change this scandalous government. Nothing was done [by the government] it,” she said.

Slamming the Congress, Ms Banerjee said the party has failed to fulfil it duties as the opposition.

“Congress is asking for votes but where is its moral right? I was in Congress but it expelled those who were with me. We are fighting against BJP and every day it is knocking at our doors with ED and the CBI,” she said.

TMC will "oust" BJP from Delhi, Banerjee said and asked the people of Meghalaya to vote for her party. Man Kidnapped, Killed Minor, Body Recovered Weeks Later: Delhi Cops

A 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and murdering an adolescent girl, whose decomposed body was recovered recently by police, an official said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in west Delhi's Nangloi area.

The accused has been arrested, they said, adding that the post-mortem report will confirm sexual assault.

A case of kidnapping was registered in Nangloi police station under section 363 (punishment for kidnapping) of the IPC on February 10 on the statement of the 11-year-old's mother, a senior police officer said.

According to the woman, her daughter had gone to school on February 9 and did not return after that, officer said.

After registering the case, an investigation was taken up.

During investigation, raids were conducted in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. Accused Rohit alias Vinod, a resident of Dairywala Bagh, Paschim Vihar, was nabbed on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Harendra Kumar Singh said.

The accused disclosed that he met the girl on February 9. After befriending her, he took her to a secluded place in the Ghewra area where he killed her and left, the DCP said.

He took the police team to the spot where the decomposed body of the minor was recovered. The crime and forensic science laboratory (FSL) teams were called and the body was sent to the mortuary, police said.

On Wednesday, an autopsy was conducted and the body was handed over to the family for last rites. The accused has been taken on police remand for further investigation, they said, adding that the section of murder has been added to the case.

The motive of the killing is being ascertained. The autopsy report will confirm any sexual assault, police added.

According to sources, the initial investigation has revealed that the victim did not go to school on February 9. The accused found her alone at a park where he approached her.

They both walked together for four to five kilometres along a railway track. Her body was recovered from a secluded area near the track. The accused was familiar with the area as he used to take the same route when he worked in a factory earlier, sources said.

The family members of the deceased identified the body through her school bag. The previous involvement, if any, of the accused is being checked, they added.

Air India Newark-Delhi Flight Makes Emergency Landing In Stockholm

An Air India flight from Newark to Delhi, carrying 292 passengers, made an emergency landing in Stockholm on Wednesday due to an oil leak in one of the engines and aviation regulator DGCA will probe the incident, according to senior officials.

A senior DGCA official said the flight, operated with a Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft, had an oil leak in one of the engines. Following this, the engine was shut down, and later the aircraft made an emergency landing in Stockholm.

The plane landed safely, the official added.

In a statement in the afternoon, an Air India spokesperson said its flight AI 106 from Newark (US) to Delhi faced a technical issue and was diverted to Stockholm early this morning with 284 passengers and 8 infants onboard.

The  airline said the aircraft is being thoroughly checked to address the technical issue.

The flight had total 311 people onboard, including 15 cabin crew and 4 pilots.

During the ground inspection, oil was seen coming out from the drain mast of engine two. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will probe the incident, the DGCA official said.

"The flight landed safely at the Stockholm airport. Passengers have been provided lounge access and meals. The immigration procedure of the passengers is being carried out to ensure their stay at the city's hotels," the statement said.

"Put Family Facing Eviction In Taj Hotel": Bombay High Court In Jest

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority for seeking to evict a man and his family from their transit tenement and in a lighter vein said the planning body should put them up at the Taj hotel in south Mumbai.

A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Neela Gokhale questioned the 48-hour eviction notice sent to the man, whose original home was pulled down for a public project, and asked if MMRDA expected him to “stand at Flora Fountain (a Mumbai landmark) and beg”.

The court was hearing a petition filed by one Shobhnath Singh challenging MMRDA's notice of February 8, 2023, that asked him to vacate the tenement within 48 hours failing which he and his family would be forcibly removed.

The petitioner submitted that he did not have an alternative accommodation and that the threat of forcible dispossession was unreasonable.

The bench asked MMRDA how they could give such a short notice to the petitioner without providing an alternative accommodation.

“The petitioner and his family are already dispossessed from their original flat and have been living in this transit home. Now you (MMRDA) want him out of the transit home too?” Justice Patel said.

The court held that pending hearing of the petition, interim protection ought to be given to the petitioner.

“If you (MMRDA) oppose this then I will direct you to put him (petitioner) and his family up at the Taj hotel,” Justice Patel said in a lighter vein.

The bench was informed by the petitioner's lawyer that the MMRDA had locked the tenement. The court directed the MMRDA to remove the lock immediately and posted the matter for hearing on March 10.

As per the plea, the petitioner's original house in suburban Kanjurmarg was demolished for a public project.

He and his family have been put up in a transit tenement in the same area since 2017.

Advocate Aparna Patkar, who represented MMRDA, told the court that the transit tenement was to be granted to other project-affected persons and hence the notice of eviction was issued.

"BJP Cheated People On Naga Political Issue": Congress Chief At Poll Rally

Accusing the BJP-led central government of cheating the people of Nagaland on the Naga political problem, the Congress today asserted that given a chance, it will fulfil the aspirations of the citizens of the northeastern state.

Solving the decades-old Naga issue is one of the top-most commitments in the Congress' manifesto, party president Mallikarjun Kharge said at an election rally here.

"The Narendra Modi government does not have the political will to put into effect the agreed solutions to the Naga political issue and has cheated the people of Nagaland and the country as well," he said.

Stating that civil society organisations have been demanding the implementation of political solutions, Mr Kharge claimed that the state government is indulging in delaying tactics on the pretext that more talks are needed.

"Prime Minister Modi announced on August 3, 2015, that the Naga issue has been resolved with the signing of the Naga Accord which was later renamed as Framework Agreement with the NSCN-IM. But nearly eight years down the line, this has become an empty boast," he said.

To find a solution to the decades-old problem, the Centre has been holding separate negotiations with NSCN-IM since 1997 and the Working Committee of Naga National Political Group (NNPG), comprising at least seven groups, since 2017.

The Modi government inked a Framework Agreement with NSCN-IM in 2015 and Agreed Position with NNPGs in 2017. However, the final solution is yet to be attained with NSCN-IM remaining adamant on its demand for a separate flag and constitution for the Nagas.

While releasing the BJP manifesto for the Nagaland election on February 14, party president J P Nadda asserted that the solution to the Naga political issue is in the final stage as the Narendra Modi government is tirelessly working on it. However, the manifesto has no mention of it.

Claiming that the Congress is the only party that had initiated the process to find a solution to the Naga political issue, Mr Kharge said, "Even now, this is one of the top-most commitments in our election manifesto".

Without naming the Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO), which has been demanding a separate state comprising six districts of the state, the veteran Congress leader claimed that the BJP is bent on creating a division in Nagaland.

Abrogating Article 371A of the Constitution which gives special provision to Nagaland will pave the way for "easy implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, which is the mainstay of the divisive agenda of the BJP", he alleged.

"The BJP's politics is aimed at destroying the indigenous and unique culture of Nagas," he alleged.

If voted to power, the Congress will implement measures for the development of the Eastern Nagaland region, Mr Kharge said.

The region will get its own mini secretariat and directorate of school education, the Department of Under Developed Areas will be relocated to Tuensang while dialogue between the governments of India and Myanmar will be initiated, he said.

A section of the citizens of Myanmar are Nagas.

"Given an opportunity, the Congress will fulfil the aspirations of the people of the state," he said at the rally.

The assembly election will be held on February 27 and votes will be counted on March 2.

"One Of The Toughest Innings": Mandhana After India Enter Women's T20 WC SF

Star opener Smriti Mandhana on Monday described the match-winning 87-run knock against Ireland as one of her toughest innings due to the difficult conditions at St George's Park. Thanks to Mandhana's career-best knock, India posted 155 for six after opting to bat first in their last group match of the Women's T20 World Cup. In their run chase, Ireland were 54 for two in 8.2 overs, when heavy rains stopped play. The DLS par score after 8.2 overs was 59, and Ireland were five runs short of that total.

As the match could not be restarted, India won the match under the D/L method.

"The finger is fine. One of the most toughest innings I would have played. Not the wicket but the pace they were bowling and with the wind, it got worse," Mandhana said after the match.

"We were telling each other (with opening partner Shafali Verma) to try and maintain our shape. I was batting bad and she was not timing it well," said Mandhana, who was named the player of the match for her 56-ball knock.

"But we were trying to discuss that and there was a lot of wind and we needed to get used to the pace they were bowling. Good to post some runs and go into the semis. The England match wasn't the way we wanted." India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said it was a good game for her side.

"Smriti got runs, which is very important for us. Whenever she gives us starts we get to good total." Asked why she batted at number three, Harmanpreet, who made 13, said, "Just wanted to go up and spend some time in the middle, since I haven't really got that.

"(Making to semis) Means a lot, we are working a lot and wanted to do well whenever we get the opportunities. Good to get into the semis and we will give our 100%. We always enjoy our match against them (Australia in semifinal). It will be a do or die and we want to play good cricket." Ireland captain Laura Delany was disappointed with the manner in which the match ended.

"We were preparing for wind and we just tried to build partnership but rain got in our way.

"After 2018, Cricket Ireland have invested a lot in contracts. We want to improve on our fielding, it has overall been a very positive experience. Orla Prendergast has gone from strength to strength and if we could emulate her, it will be great."

Mandhana Sizzles As India Qualify For Women's T20 World Cup Semifinals

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana stood out with a career-best 56-ball 87 as India entered the semifinals of the Women's T20 World Cup with a five-run win over Ireland in a rain-affected match on Monday. On a surface that was far from ideal for batting and where most struggled to force the pace, Mandhana led by example with nine delectable fours and three sixes to help India reach 155 for six in the stipulated 20 overs. In reply, Ireland got off to a disastrous start as opener Amy Hunter (1) was run out before Renuka Singh bowled Orla Prendergast for nought. Reeling at 2/1 in the very first over, Ireland recovered to reach 54 for two in the ninth over, when the heavens opened up and forced the players inside. Play did not resume thereafter.

At that point, Ireland needed need 102 runs in 70 balls and were five runs behind the Duckworth/Lewis par score of 59, paving the way for India's victory.

When the game was interrupted, Gaby Lewis and skipper Laura Delany were batting on 32 and 17 respectively.

India are set to take on defending champions Australia in the last four stage.

This is India's third successive semifinal appearance following the one in 2018 and runners-up finish in 2020.

With the win, last edition's runners-up India bounced back from the 11-run defeat to England in their previous match.

Earlier, opting to bat after skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (13) won the toss, India were off to a fine start with the opening duo of Mandhana and Shafali Verma putting on 62 runs in just under 10 overs at St George's Park.

But Shafali once again got out after getting a start, caught by Amy Hunter off the bowling of captain Delany, who introduced herself into the attack after the frontline bowlers failed to get the team a breakthrough.

Harmanpreet joined Mandhana in the middle, and the two looked to build on a partnership. Playing strokes turned out to be difficult on a surface that appeared to be a bit on the slower side.

The slow nature of the wicket notwithstanding, Mandhana maintained an excellent strike rate and reached her half-century in style, hitting leg-spinner Cara Murray for a six over deep mid-wicket.

Mandhana was lucky to have survive a scare just before getting to her fifty, but Arlene Kelly could not complete the catch after the batter top-edged a tossed-up delivery from Murray towards mid-wicket.

Mandhana then struck two successive fours off Georgina Dempsey, before sending Delany over the cow corner for another maximum.

Ireland came back with the wickets of Harmanpreet and Richa Ghosh in successive balls, but Mandhana continued to attack the bowlers and hit two more boundaries off Kelly before giving the same treatment to Delany, striking her for a four and a six to help India inch towards 150.

A century was on the cards, but Mandhana's brilliant innings came to an end as she tried to take the aerial route.

Jemimah Rodrigues struck two fours in the final over, before getting off in the last ball of the India innings for a 12-ball 19.

Anti-Sikh Riots Accused Jagdish Tytler Among Delegates At Congress Meet

The Congress on Monday released a list of AICC delegates from Delhi, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and former Union minister Jagdish Tytler, whose name figured in a probe panel report on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The election of Tytler as an All India Congress Committee (AICC) delegate drew strong reactions from Delhi's ruling AAP and the BJP, which said it exposed the opposition party's character of creating division and chaos in the country.

The AICC delegates perform key roles in the party. They, along with Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates, will attend the party's 85th plenary session to be held in Raipur from February 24 to 26.

The AICC delegates form the electorate whenever there is an election for members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the top decision-making body of the party.

The Steering Committee of the party will take a call on February 24 on whether there will be elections for 11 of the 25 members of the CWC this time.

The Congress has 1,338 elected and 487 co-opted AICC delegates from across the country.

Former Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are among the elected AICC members from Uttar Pradesh, which has the maximum number of delegates.

There are a total of 36 elected and 25 co-opted AICC delegates from Delhi.

Delhi Congress chief Anil Kumar Chaudhary, former Union minister Ajay Maken and former AICC general secretary (organisation) Janardan Dwivedi are among the elected AICC delegates from Delhi.

The list of elected delegates also includes Devendra Yadav, Manish Chatrath, Abhishek Dutt, Krishna Allavaru, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Sandeep Dikshit, Subhash Chopra and Alka Lamba.

Among the co-opted AICC members from Delhi are Praveen Davar, former Delhi ministers Haroon Yusuf and Krishna Tirath, boxer Vijender Singh, Ragini Nayak and K B Byju.

Targeting the Congress over the election of Tytler, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the Congress action shows its leader Rahul Gandhi who talked of "mohabbat ki dukan" during his Bharat Jodo Yatra is actually opening "nafrat ki dukan (shop of hatred)".

"The leader who spread maximum hatred during anti-Sikh riots in 1984 has been made an elected member of AICC. It would not be wrong to say that such leaders are spine of Congress," Bhatia charged.

Slamming the Congress Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson Raghav Chadha said, "With another promotion for Jagdish Tytler, Congress' message for Sikhs is clear - that it will continue to indulge in a brazen display of insensitivity towards Sikhs. Like I said earlier, a pathological dislike for Sikhs is in Congress' DNA." The name of Tytler, once a formidable leader of the Congress in Delhi, figured in a report of the Nanavati Commission which probed into the anti-Sikh riots.

"Value Of My Time More Than That Of Adani, Tata, Ambani, Birla": Ramdev

Corporates use 99 per cent of their time on self-interest, while the time of a seer is for the good of all, Yoga guru Ramdev said in Goa's Panaji on Sunday.

He also said the three days he was here were more valuable than the time of billionaire industrialists like Ambani and Adani.

Ramdev was addressing a function organised to felicitate his aide Acharya Balkrishna in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Union Minister Shripad Naik.

"I have come here for three days from Haridwar. The value of my time is more than that of Adani, Ambani, Tata, and Birla. Corporates spend 99 per cent of their time in self-interest, whereas a seer's time is for common good," he claimed.

He hailed Balkrishna for reviving Patanjali from a sick company to a firm with a turnover of Rs 40,000 crore this financial year due to his professional governance, transparent management and accountability.

The dream of making India 'param vaibhavshali' can be achieved by creating empires like Patanjali.

Madhya Pradesh's New Liquor Policy "Discourages Drinking": Minister

Ahatas' (area attached to a liquor shop for people to drink) and shop bars have been closed under the new excise policy that was approved by the Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Sunday.

The announcement comes amid senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Uma Bharti's demand for a "controlled liquor policy" in MP.

"All ahatas and shop bars are being shut in the state. From hereon, liquor will be sold at the shops and places of drinking will not be allowed," state Home Minister Narottam Mishra said after the cabinet meeting on Sunday evening.

Mr Mishra, who is the state government spokesperson, said the distance of liquor shops from educational institutions, girls' hostels and religious places is being increased from 50 meters to 100 meters, while laws to cancel the driving licenses in cases of drunk driving will be made more stringent.

"Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been working to discourage drinking liquor so no new shop was opened in the state since 2010. On the contrary, shops were closed. During Narmada Seva Yatra, 64 shops were closed in the state. The new excise policy is also designed to discourage liquor consumption," Mr Mishra said.

Ms Bharti has been campaigning against liquor consumption and has asked the BJP government of Shivraj Singh Chouhan not to cash in on the drinking habit of people through a liberal excise regime.

She tied two cows in front of a liquor shop in Orchha town in Niwari district, which is famous for its temples and palaces, and exhorted people to drink milk and not alcohol under her 'madhushala mein gaushala' (cowshed in liquor vend) programme.

She had also earlier thrown dung at this shop in protest against the sale of liquor.

Ms Bharti, who started her campaign with the demand for total prohibition, has now been asking for regularisation of sale in the state, where Assembly polls are due by the end of the year.

"Can Be Heir To Property, Not Thoughts": D Fadnavis's Jibe Over Sena Row

Uddhav Thackeray claimed the Shiv Sena had rotted during its 25-year alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, while it has been decimated in its two-and-half-year alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party and Congress, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis quipped on Sunday.

Speaking at a 'Vijay Sankalp' rally in Kolhapur in the presence of Union Home Minister and senior colleague Amit Shah, he said the "traitors" had been taught a lesson and shown their place six months ago, apparently a reference to the split in the Shiv Sena, which brought down the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

Taking a swipe at Thackeray, the deputy CM said, "Those who said they rotted in the 25-year alliance with the BJP have now seen their party finished in two-and-half years after joining hands with the NCP, Congress (to form the Maha Vikas Aghdi post the 2019 Assembly poll results). They have been brought to the streets." In an apparent attack on Thackeray's repeated utterances that the party was founded by his father late Bal Thackeray, who groomed its leaders, Fadnavis said "the Shiv Sena cannot be a property".

"It is a school of thought. There can be a heir to a property or to some assets but not for thoughts. You have to put them in action and live up to these thoughts," Fadnavis said.

"BJP Move To Divert Attention": Rahul Gandhi On Kashmir Eviction Drive

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Sunday chaired a meeting of party leaders of Kashmir and slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party for the ongoing eviction drive in Jammu and Kashmir and termed it as a deliberate move by BJP to divert the attention of the people from real issues.

The administration of the Union Territory launched an eviction drive against illegal encroachment by 'big land owners' and 'influential' people and nearly 23,000 hectares have been retrieved during the ongoing anti-encroachment drive in the Jammu division.

During the meeting, the former Congress chief exhorted party leaders to work for the betterment of people.

Mr Gandhi expressed serious concern over the difficulties confronting people in absence of the democratic system in Jammu and Kashmir while slamming the government for snatching the rights of people.

Slamming the eviction drive in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Gandhi said, "BJP's deliberate move to divert the attention of the people from real issues especially rising unemployment, unprecedented price hike and other developmental issues concerning people."

Worried over the current situation of Jammu and Kashmir, he said, "Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two UTs against the wishes of the people besides they are being abandoned of their democratic rights by the BJP aiming to hide its (BJPs) wrong policies and utter failure on all fronts, but the Congress shall continue to fight for the democratic rights of the people and ensure justice to them."

Rahul Gandhi also expressed confidence that people especially the youth are joining the Congress party given its pro-people policies urging Party leaders to keep their doors open for those wishing to join Congress and encourage them to work for the well-being of the people.

The Congress MP told the party leaders that he will continue to visit Jammu and Kashmir as he feels their pain and anguish, he will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have undergone enormous hardships due to the wrong policies adopted by the BJP Government towards Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking on the occasion, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi urged the party leaders to work hard to strengthen the Congress party at the grassroots and perform their legitimate role to resolve people's issues, for the fact, Congress Party is an instrument of service to the people.

Gujarat Doctor Found Hanging, Son Accuses MP Of Issuing Threat: Cops

Days after a doctor from Veraval town in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district died allegedly by suicide, his son submitted an application to the police seeking registration of an FIR against a Member of Parliament and the lawmaker's father for “threatening” the medical practitioner and usurping nearly Rs 1.75 crore.

The Veraval City police station accepted the application by Dr Atul Chag's son Hitarth on Friday, and started further investigation into the case, said Superintendent of Police Manoharsinh Jadeja.

Dr Chag, an MD Physician, was a well-known doctor of the Veraval region. He was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hospital in the town on February 12. Police had found a one-line suicide note blaming the MP and his father.

While his family had claimed at that time that the note was indeed written by Dr Chag, police had said it had been sent for forensic analysis to ascertain its authenticity.

On Friday, Dr Chag's only son Hitarth approached the Veraval police station and submitted an application seeking registration of FIR against the lawmaker and his father under Indian Penal Code sections including 306 (abetment of suicide), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 506-2 (criminal intimidation).

As per the application, the MP and his father had a close relationship with Dr Chag for the last 20 years and the duo had borrowed nearly Rs 1.75 crore from the doctor in instalments since 2008 by winning his trust.

According to Hitarth, the MP's father had given four blank cheques to Dr Chag to win his trust. When the duo stopped responding to Dr Chag's repeated requests to return the money, the latter deposited one of the cheques of Rs 90 lakh in the bank but it was dishonoured, Hitarth said in his application.

When Dr Chag sought an explanation, the duo allegedly warned him of “dire consequences” and also threatened to abduct his only son. According to Hitarth, the MP had openly threatened his late father saying that nothing would happen to him as he is a lawmaker.

Days before the suicide, the duo had verbally abused Dr Chag and had also threatened to kill him and his son Hitarth for demanding the money back, as per the application.

The threat and the thought of losing money deeply upset the doctor, as per his son.

Hitarth further said that the note found by police on February 12 was indeed written by his father and his father took the extreme step out of shock and fear.

MK Stalin Condemns Karnataka "Firing" Incident That Killed Tamil Nadu Man

The body of a 40-year-old man who went missing days ago on the inter-state border between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka was found floating on the banks of River Palar on Friday in Erode district, police said.

As villagers alleged he was shot dead by Karnataka forest personnel, tension prevailed in areas including Kolathur bordering the neighbouring State and Tamil Nadu and Karnataka authorities have deployed adequate policemen to maintain law and order. Vehicular traffic movement was also affected for sometime.

Tamil Nadu political parties condemned the 'killing' and sought action against those responsible for it. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin "strongly condemned" the "firing" incident. The deceased man was identified as M Karavadiayan alias Raja and he hailed from Govindapadi village of Kolathur in Salem District, police said adding his kin allege that he was shot dead by Karnataka forest personnel.

Raja was part of a group of 4 men which travelled to a forest area on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka inter-state border on February 14 and they were fishing in the river.

According to the local people, the allegation levelled by Karnataka personnel was that the group attempted to hunt and poach in the jungle. While he died after he was shot at, others reportedly sustained injuries and fled the spot.

Erode district police said that a probe under the CrPC is on over Raja's suspicious death. A truck driver, Raja faced allegations of hunting wild animals off Bargur and Mettur in Tamil Nadu and along the border with neighbouring Karnataka.

He faced a case in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka in connection with poaching. Also, a case was pending against him in Kolathur (Salem District) over gambling. On February 14, Raja had been to Chamarajaranagar bordering Tamil Nadu for hunting.

He could have 'accidentally drowned' or may have jumped into the river 'for some other reason,' police said.

It could have happened close to Mettur to Male ahadeshwara hills Road near Palaru River bridge between February 14 and 17. The incident was reported at 3 PM on Friday to the district police.

They declined to specify if Raja drowned after sustaining bullet injuries or if it was only a case of drowning. His body was found floating on the river bank and it was sent to Salem Government Medical College Hospital for autopsy, they said. Bargur police (Erode District) are investigating.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Stalin condoled the death of Karavadiayan and announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased.

He referred to the allegations of the victim's relatives about Karnataka Forest personnel shooting him dead.

"I strongly condemn the firing by the Karnataka Forest Department," he said.

The victim's family will be paid the amount from the Chief Minister's relief fund, he said in a statement in Chennai.

Pattali Makkal Katchi leader Anbumani Ramadoss said Raja was shot dead by Karnataka personnel while he was fishing and strongly condemned it. The Rajya Sabha MP said fishing is a routine activity, a source of livelihood and not a crime "The border area with Karnataka is part of India and it is not a border with Sri Lanka or Pakistan." In case, fishing is not permitted in waterbodies on the interstate border, those violating the norm could have been driven away or legal action may have been taken. Killing is a huge crime and unpardonable, he said. This is not the first time Karnataka indulged in opening fire and in 2018, a Tamil Nadu fisherman Palani was shot dead, he said.

In order to divert the issue, the Karnataka Forest department is spreading fake news that Raja opened fire on its personnel and he died in the ensuing clash. A case should be registered and Karnataka forest personnel involved in killing Raja should be arrested, Anbumani said.

He urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide Rs 50 lakh solatium and a government job to one of the family members of the deceased Raja.

CPI State Secretary R Mutharasan said Karnataka 'continued' to carry out such killings and condemned it. He demanded that the incident be probed by authorities and the kin of the deceased should be provided compensation.
