"No Sense At All": PCB Blasted By Pak Greats For No Host Name On Jerseys

Pakistan Cricket Board is facing strong criticism from fans and a few former players over the omission of country's name on the official Asia Cup logo on participating teams' jerseys. Former captain Rashid Latif was among those who lashed out at the board soon after the Pakistan team took the field against Nepal in the opening match of the Asia Cup in Multan on Wednesday. Though Asia Cup is jointly staged by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the former is the host of the tournament. “This is unacceptable and it is the Asian Cricket Council which must explain this oversight since the Asia Cup is their property,” he said. Since the hue and cry, PCB unofficially has tried to play down the situation by saying that the ACC had taken a decision after last year's Asia Cup that the host country's name would not be given with the Asia Cup logo in future events.

But most Pakistani cricket fans on social media are not willing to accept this explanation. Some have even questioned that even if the ACC had taken such a decision, why did the PCB agree to it since Pakistan was hosting a multi-team event after 15-years.

“Makes no sense at all. Then why has the ACC given the host country's name on the logos for their Asian Emerging Nations Cup or their Asian under-16 event held in July in Malaysia,” former Test batsman Mohsin Khan questioned.

Mohsin Khan said the ACC should clear the confusion.

Another former player who didn't want to be named believes that Jay Shah, the President of the ACC and secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was the reason for Pakistan not being acknowledged as the host nation on the official logo.

“Given the current scenario between the two countries perhaps the BCCI official felt it would be embarrassing for the Indian team players to wear kits with the name of Pakistan on the official Asia Cup logo,” he said.

Rashid Latif didn't rule out this possibility and said what had happened was embarrassing and needed to be clarified.

Defaced Passport Covers Not Acceptable: Official

The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a stern advisory to combat the growing misuse of Indian Passports as advertising platforms, a senior official said here on Thursday.

It highlighted the alarming trend where travel agents have been defacing the cover of Indian Passports by pasting their agency or company stickers, said Dasari Balaiah, Regional Passport Officer and Head of MEA Branch Secretariat, Hyderabad in a release.

The practice not only undermines the sanctity of the passport but contravenes Union Government guidelines pertaining to passport maintenance, it said.

"The outer cover of the Indian Passport carries the national emblem with the Ashoka Chakra on it and incorporates several security features aimed at ensuring its authenticity and integrity. Pasting adhesives or promotional stickers by agents can mask the national emblem and tamper with the security features and can be compromised--preventing verification of authenticity," the release said.

It may also cause difficulties in assessing the genuineness of the passports and thereby lead to issues for Indian travellers at immigration points, the release added.

"No Match For Mahi Bhai But...": India Star On What Makes Kohli 'The Best'

MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have been often compared for their captaincy, despite having different leadership styles. While Dhoni transformed white-ball cricket in India, leading the team to multiple ICC tournaments, Kohli's India ruled Test cricket for a period of three-four years, including multiple series wins in Australia. However, veteran pacer Ishant Sharma, who played majority of his cricket under Dhoni's leadership, labelled Kohli as "the best". While speaking on JioCinema's 'Home of Heroes' show, Ishant said that Dhoni groomed the fast bowlers before handing them over to Kohli, who took them to their prime.

"He (Kohli) was the best. When Virat was captain, bowling was complete. When we were playing under Mahi bhai, we were in a transition phase. At that time, Shami and Umesh were new, and only I was there. Everyone else would rotate. Bhuvi was also new. There is no match for Mahi bhai as a communicator. But what he did was groom the bowlers and leave them with Virat. Shami and Umesh, over time, became different bowlers and then Jasprit came in. So, he got a complete package. The best thing he did was identify everyone's traits, that he used to talk about one thing with one person and then Iet them be," said Ishant.

The 34-year-old added that Kohli's aggressive approach, coupled with his ability to identify roles of each player, made him special.

"First thing, he was aggressive. If you're bowling with the new ball, you can concede 25 runs in five overs as long as you take two wickets. The important thing was that he gave everyone defined roles. After 2021, I realized he wanted all of us to think out of the box," the veteran pacer added.

For the record, Kohli (63.38) has a much higher win percentage than Dhoni (53.61) as captain of India. Only Rohit Sharma has a better win percentage than Kohli, but the former has played far less games as captain.

Asia Cup 2023: Matheesha Pathirana Sets Up Big Win For Sri Lanka

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka made resolute fifties after Matheesha Pathirana's hostile bowling as Sri Lanka slayed Bangladesh by five wickets in their Asia Cup opener in Pallekele on Thursday. Pacer Pathirana's 4 for 32 restricted Bangladesh to 164. The home side then rode on Samarawickrama's 54 off 77 balls and Asalanka's unbeaten 62 off 92 balls to overhaul the target in 39 overs. Samarawickrama is going through a career rejuvenation this year after fading from the scene.

He earned a recall to the Lanka Test side after five years against Ireland this July, and he also made a return to their ODI unit after a gap of four years during the home series against Afghanistan in June.

Samarawickrama made his Test return count with a hundred in the second match against Ireland. On Thursday, his fifty was the cornerstone of Lanka's crucial win over Bangladesh.

But Lanka had to overcome a few uncomfortable moments before that.

Bangladesh bowlers had reduced Sri Lanka to 43 for three in 9.2 overs, dragging their side back into the match after their batsmen's shoddy effort.

In Lankan cricketing circles, Samarawickrama has always been known as a stylish batsman.

Even on a slowing down pitch, the right-hander produced some sparkling shots using a wafer-thin bat and supple wrists.

His ability to find gaps around the field was visible when he drove pacer Shoriful Islam through covers with disdain for four, and later flicked left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan through mid-wicket for a boundary.

Samarawickrama had an equally composed partner in Asalanka as they produced 78 crucial runs for the fourth wicket.

The left-handed Asalanka, who has been in fine fettle this year in ODIs, was never hesitant to take the odd risks for a boundary, and it helped Samarawickrama to bat assuredly at the other end.

But off-spinner Mahedi Hasan snapped the partnership.

Hasan had Samarawickrama stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim with a tossed-up delivery that beat the batter.

Bangladesh did get a couple of quick wickets, but they just did not have enough runs on the board to defend.

For that, Sri Lanka should thank their bowlers who worked around a resilient fifty by Najmul Shanto, who made 89 off 122 balls with seven fours.

However, other batsmen did not pick up any hint from Shanto as Pathirana and spinner Maheesh Theekshana (2/19) combined to strike at regular intervals after Bangladesh opted to bat first.

The Pallekele International Cricket Stadium pitch had a bit of carry and bounce in it, and Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka brought Theekshana into attack in the second over itself.

Theekshana, the highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka in ODIs this year, fetched an immediate breakthrough as he trapped Tanzid Hasan plumb in front with a lovely delivery.

The ball pitched around the leg-stump and spun across to hit Hasan's back pad and the Bangladesh opener had to walk back with a duck on his debut.

Pathirana soon jettisoned skipper Shakib Al Hasan. The left-hander could not negotiate the extra pace of Pathirana, and the ball nestled in the hands of stumper Kusal Mendis.

Bangladesh were 36 for three at this stage and they needed a couple of partnerships to steady things in the middle.

The fourth wicket alliance between Shanto and Towhid Hridoy (20) saw Bangladesh adding 59 runs in nearly 14 overs.

Shanto guided his young partner well as Bangladesh showed signs of recovery.

However, Lanka captain Shanaka ended the blooming alliance while winning a leg-before appeal against Hridoy.

Pathirana returned to end the stay of veteran Mushfiqur Rahim, whose attempted upper cut was snaffled by Chamika Karunaratne near third man.

With the cream of their batting returned to the pavilion, Shanto was Bangladesh's remaining hope to reach a competitive total.

The left-hander, who is one of Bangladesh's better ODI batsmen this year, batted with caution without sacrificing chances to find boundaries.

His on-drive off pacer Kasun Rajitha was a fine piece of timing and cover.

However, Theekshana ended Shanto's tenure at the crease.

Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will now travel to Pakistan to face Afghanistan in their respective group matches.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's Suspension From Lok Sabha Revoked

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's suspension from Lok Sabha was revoked on Wednesday, hours after a parliamentary panel made a recommendation to the effect.

"The suspension of Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, MP from the service of the House which was effected on 10.8.2023 till the submission of the Report by the Committee of Privileges, has been revoked with effect from 30.8.2023," a notification by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said.

Earlier in the day, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury appeared before the Privileges Committee of Lok Sabha and expressed regret over his conduct in the House following which the panel unanimously adopted a resolution to revoke his suspension. The report of the committee was immediately communicated to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Appearing before the committee, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also expressed regret over certain remarks made by him in the House which had led to his suspension from the Lok Sabha on the penultimate day of the monsoon session of Parliament on August 10.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is learnt to have told the committee, chaired by BJP member Sunil Kumar Singh, that it was never his intention to hurt anybody's feelings and expressed regret for certain remarks made by him.

"The committee has adopted a resolution to revoke the suspension of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from the Lok Sabha. The resolution will be sent to the Speaker as soon as possible," a committee member said.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was named by Om Birla for "unruly conduct" on August 10 and was suspended from the membership of Lok Sabha pending a report from the Privileges Committee.

At the meeting of the committee on August 18, several members were of the view that Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been punished for his conduct by Lok Sabha and there was no further need to examine his behaviour by a parliamentary panel.

However, as a process of natural justice, the committee had asked Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to appear before it on Wednesday.

Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan To Take On Nepal In Sweltering Multan

Pakistan will begin their campaign in the Asia Cup on Wednesday taking on Nepal in the city's sweltering heat as multi-team international cricket returns to the country after nearly 15 years. It has been a long, rough road for Pakistan cricket ever since the militant attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in March, 2009. Following the attack, not only did Pakistan lose the Champions Trophy hosting rights but also its share of the World Cup matches in 2011. With the International Cricket Council (ICC) and member nations reluctant to visit the country because of security reasons, Pakistan went without an international game at home for nearly eight years against top-tier teams.

Which is why, the four matches of the Asia Cup being held in the country hold great significance for Pakistan, who have also been awarded the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Pakistan, who recently rose to No. 1 in ODI rankings after a clean sweep of the ODI series against Afghanistan in Sri Lanka, should win comfortably against Nepal, who are playing their first Asia Cup.

Only two Nepal players, leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane and allrounder Dipendra Singh Airee, have the experience of playing in T20 leagues.

Barring Lamichhane, who has played in the Pakistan Super League, the others know very little about the playing conditions here.

Having got their ODI status in 2018, Nepal are ranked 15th in the 50-over format, a sign of how close they are to achieving their dream of featuring in the 2027 World Cup, which will be a 14-team affair.

Having arrived in Pakistan a week back, it will be interesting to see how they fare against an outfit which is one of the favourites to lift the Asia Cup.

Pakistan will play just two games at home and the remaining in Sri Lanka, including the big ones against India. But the game against Nepal will offer their players a good opportunity to fine-tune their game.

Babar Azam recently hit two half centuries against Afghanistan and only a big one will satisfy the home team fans.

With the weather expected to be hot and humid, both teams will rely heavily on their spinners to do the job.

Ben Stokes Set To Play As Batter Only At ICC World Cup After ODI U-Turn

England are prepared to play Ben Stokes as a batsman only when they defend their 50-over men's World Cup title in India after the Test captain reversed his decision to retire from one-day internationals. The all-rounder, troubled by a longstanding left knee injury that restricted his bowling during the recent drawn Ashes Test series at home to Australia, said playing in all three international formats was "unsustainable" when calling time on his ODI career 13 months ago. The 32-year-old had planned to use a six-month gap until England next play Test cricket, away to India, in order to attend to his chronic problem.

But he is now set for a role as a specialist batsman as one of nine survivors named in a 15-man squad to face New Zealand in three home ODIs next month that is also set to double as England's party for a World Cup in India that runs from October 5-November 19.

"It wasn't really a case of changing his (Stokes's) mind," said England national selector Luke Wright after the squad was unveiled on Wednesday.

"Once his body was in a good place and he'd had a rest, he was really keen to play. He still has time to do his rest and rehab, which he's doing, and he says his knee does feel like it's improving.

"The one thing we won't be doing is pushing him to bowl unless he's absolutely fit and raring to go. That was a big part of the decision for him, being able to just play as a batter and that was an easy decision for us.

"Ultimately the decision came down to it's a World Cup we want to win and we feel like we are better, and have more chance, with Stokesy than we haven't. If ever there's someone for the big moments it's Ben Stokes."

The return of Stokes, the player of the match in the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord's and the man whose unbeaten fifty led his side to victory in the Twenty20 equivalent last year, comes at the expense of Harry Brook.

The Yorkshire batsman has been the rising star of the England set-up during the past year, with the 24-year-old having compiled four hundreds in 12 Tests, while boasting strike rates of 98.85 and 137.77 in ODIs and T20s respectively.

"It's as hard a decision as you're ever going to get," said Wright, who labelled Brook a "superstar" before adding: "But unfortunately in a 15-man squad, someone's going to have to miss out. On this occasion it's been him."

Uncapped Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who has been cloked at 95 mph (153 kph), is also in the squad, seemingly as cover for Jofra Archer.

The injured Archer, the Super Over star of the 2019 World Cup final, is currently recovering from his latest elbow injury.

Archer last played for England in March and Wright, once a team-mate of the 28-year-old at county side Sussex, said: "There has got to be a duty of care with Jof, we know how desperate we all are to have him, there's no doubt about that, but we've also got to get it right for him.

"As much as the temptation is to try and rush him in and get him in for the start of this World Cup, unfortunately we're just going to run out of time.

"The best case scenario for Jof at the moment would probably be available for the back end of the tournament. But obviously, a lot of things have still got to go right with his rehab before then."

Children Have a Right to Sue Nations Over Climate, UN Panel Says

As a result of their governments' failure to address climate pollution, young people are increasingly suing them in court, and sporadically winning. Their efforts were supported this week by the Committee on the Rights of the Child, a free-standing expert panel that interprets international human rights law. The committee stated that all nations have a legal commitment to safeguard children from environmental deterioration, including by "regulating business enterprises," and to allow their minor people to seek legal action, in a lengthy 20-page study released on Monday.

Goa Minister Complains To Cops Over "Derogatory Post" Linking Him To Woman

The office of Goa minister Mauvin Godinho on Sunday lodged a police complaint over a "derogatory" and "false" message being circulated along with photographs on social media linking his name to a woman deputy sarpanch of a village in the state, an official said.

The minister's personal secretary Nehal Damodar Keni lodged the complaint at Vasco police station, he said.

The complaint said that a derogatory and false message was being widely circulated on social media platforms from Saturday along with the photographs of Godinho with a woman deputy sarpanch of a village in Dabolim constituency.

Godinho, who belongs to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), represents the Dabolim assembly segment. He handles Transport and Panchayat ministries.

The complaint further said, "The message is being circulated along with publicly available photographs of Godinho, thereby creating a wrong and erroneous impression to the readers about the attribution of the said message and photographs to Godinho." Keni said in the complaint that based on the message and the photographs, some unidentified persons have also created video.

"Certain politicians have also attempted to capitalise on this grossly wrong and erroneous impression created by the message to create unrest and derive political mileage out of this patently illegal and mischievous message," the complaint said.

When contacted, a senior police official said, "We have received the complaint and it is being investigated."

Chandrayaan-3, Anti-Ragging Among Kolkata Durga Puja Themes This Year

As the whole country continues to celebrate Chandrayaan-3's success, a Durga puja committee in Kolkata has decided to design its pandal modelled on lander Vikram which touched down on the lunar south pole on August 23.

Another Puja committee will theme its pandal on the evils of ragging with the message of zero tolerance to such bullying.

Pallir Jubak Brinda Club at Sitaram Ghosh Street in north Kolkata has started work on a jumbo-size Vikram replica which will serve as its pandal.

"Come Pujas and visitors will see Maa Durga sitting in the lander model which will be perched on the ground resembling the lunar surface," a puja committee spokesperson said on Sunday.

He said the organisers will get the puja inaugurated by the father of an ISRO scientist associated with the moon mission.

India scripted history on August 23 when ISRO's ambitious third moon mission Chandrayaan-3's lander module touched down on the lunar surface making it only the fourth country to accomplish the feat and first to reach the uncharted south pole of earth's only natural satellite.

This will be our tribute to ISRO, he said.

In south Kolkata, Naktala Udayan Sangha will theme its pandal on the evils of ragging and how the menace can be eliminated from society.

"We have all been shaken by the death of a Jadavpur University student allegedly due to ragging and physical abuse by seniors. Our puja will highlight the message to prevent any kind of ragging and bullying in educational institutions," Puja committee member Anjan Samaddar said.

A 17-year-old Nadia resident, an under-graduate student of arts in Jadavpur University, died on August 10 after falling off the second-floor balcony of the boys' hostel.

The student was subjected to intense ragging and alleged physical abuse by his seniors at the hostel a day before his death.

PM Had This Request For Siddaramaiah, Karnataka Governor For ISRO Pit-Stop

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said he had requested the Karnataka Governor, Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister not to come to the airport to receive him as he did not want them to take the trouble of coming early in the morning as he was not sure of his arrival time after a long flight.

Ahead of PM Modi's Bengaluru visit to meet ISRO scientists, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday alleged that he purportedly barred Siddaramaiah and his deputy, DK Shivakumar, from receiving him at the HAL Airport.

Meanwhile, a war of words erupted between BJP MLA and former minister R Ashoka and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar over "ignoring" protocol to receive the Prime Minister at the airport.

PM Modi flew down to Bengaluru around 6 AM directly from the Greek capital of Athens to interact with ISRO scientists involved in the Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon.

Addressing a large number of people gathered outside the HAL airport, the PM said since he was coming from a far-off place (Athens) he did not know what time he would reach here, and he requested Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM Shivakumar not to take the trouble of coming to receive him as he would return soon after paying tributes to ISRO scientists.

"So, I had requested them that when I pay a formal visit, they definitely follow protocol," PM Modi said. "They cooperated and I am thankful and grateful to them," he said.

Mr Ramesh alleged that the PM was irritated with Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar for felicitating the ISRO scientists before him, and termed it as "petulant petty politics".

Siddaramaiah on Thursday visited the Missions Operations Complex at ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) and felicitated ISRO chief S Somanath and his team on the successful touch down of Chandrayaan-3 mission's lander on the Lunar surface.

"The government will officially honour them by organising a special programme at the Banquet hall at Vidhana Soudha. About 500 scientists from Karnataka were part of it. ISRO Chairman (S) Somanath and his team will be honoured," Siddaramaiah had said.

Replying to a query on the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister not visiting the airport to receive the Prime Minister, BJP leader Ashoka alleged that the Congress leaders have no sense of protocol.

"The Congress leaders do not want to see scientists. They were the ones who had stopped Chandrayaan-2. They had jailed former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan. He was released after the Supreme Court intervened," Ashoka told reporters.

"They have no knowledge of protocol. They do politics for votes while our Prime Minister's politics is for the country's development," the former minister charged.

Hitting back, DK Shivakumar said there was an official communication from the Prime Minister's Office that he, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and the Chief Minister should not come to receive him.

"Our time sense, political sense, sense of protocol and sense of honouring people is better than the BJP. We were ready in the morning itself to receive the Prime Minister as per the protocol. Our Chief Minister, our government were prepared to receive him because this is his maiden visit to Bengaluru (after Congress government came to power) and this (Chandrayaan project) has succeeded in Karnataka," Shivakumar told reporters.

"Our (Karnataka) Chief Secretary Vandita Sharma 'unofficially' received a phone call from the Prime Minister's Office (that the Governor, Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister should not come) but we did not agree to it and asked the Chief Secretary to request the PMO to get the reply in writing," he claimed.

The PMO then replied officially that the Governor, Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister should not come to receive the Prime Minister, Shivakumar claimed.

The Deputy Chief Minister said he can release the communication received from the PMO.

India on Wednesday scripted history as ISRO's ambitious third Moon mission Chandrayaan-3's Lander Module (LM) touched down on the lunar surface, making it only the fourth country to accomplish the feat, and the first to reach the uncharted south pole of Earth's only natural satellite.

Supreme Court To Hear NGO's Petition Against Lowering Of Age Of Consent

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea by an NGO against lowering the age of consent, saying it jeopardises the interest of a large number of child victims of sexual abuse, especially girls.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra issued notice to the Centre and tagged the plea of 'Bachpan Bachao Andolan' with a pending petition filed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

The NCPCR had challenged last year's order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court which said that a Muslim girl can marry a person of her choice.

The Supreme Court on Friday sought the Centre's response on the issue.

The plea of the NGO, besides seeking a slew of directions and guidelines, has also sought a directive to the courts to refrain from making observations about the girl's casual relationship and promiscuous attitude while dealing with the criminal proceedings under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

It has said that the dissemination of misinterpreted information pertaining to POCSO cases as "elopement and romantic relationships" has undermined the spirit and purpose of the stringent legislation.

It also challenged the circular issued on December 3, 2022 by the office of the Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu directing the police officials to not show haste in effecting an arrest of the accused in consensual relationships, alleging that most of them fell in the category of "mutual romantic relationships".

The NGO also highlighted that despite official facts and figures, various NGOs, governments, and/or law enforcement authorities have relied on flawed methodologies and wrongly interpreted that 60 to 70 percent of POCSO cases are pertaining to consenting minors and fall under the category of "consensual romantic relationship" between teenagers that often get criminalised.

It said that the alleged figure of 60-70 per cent is incorrect since the total number of cases between 16-18 years is approximately 30 per cent of the total POCSO cases in the country.

The organisation has further claimed that a survey conducted by support persons reveals that only 13 per cent of the total POCSO cases are alleged to be consensual in nature.

On October 17 of last year, the top court agreed to examine a plea of the NCPCR challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court's June 13, 2022 order that a minor Muslim girl can marry a person of her choice.

The Supreme Court had appointed advocate Rajshekhar Rao as amicus curiae in the matter and said that it was not going to interfere with the order of the High Court but would examine the question of law involved in the issue.

However, on January 13, it ordered that the final judgment of the High Court dated September 30, 2022, shall not be relied on as a precedent in any other case.

Several other petitions have been filed on the same issue of the age of consent, which have been tagged along with the NCPCR's plea.

The single-judge bench of the High Court on June 13, last year passed the order on a plea by a Pathankot-based Muslim couple who had approached the court for protection.

The high court had said the issue for consideration in the case was not with regard to the validity of the marriage but to address the apprehension raised by the petitioners of danger to their life and liberty.

It had directed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Pathankot, to decide the representation of the petitioners and take necessary action as per law.

Ex-UP Minister, Wife, On Life Term For Killing Poet, Freed After 16 Years

Former Uttar Pradesh Minister Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani, serving life sentences in poet Madhumita Shukla's murder, were released this evening before the completion of their terms.

The Uttar Pradesh Prisons Department on Thursday issued an order for their premature release, citing the state's 2018 policy on remission, since they have completed 16 years of their sentences.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to stay the release of the couple, who is currently admitted to Gorakhpur's BRD Medical College.

The Prisons Department cited the couple's old age and good behaviour. Amarmani is 66 and Madhumani 61, Gorakhpur district jailor AK Kushwaha said, adding that though the two have been released, they will continue to remain at the hospital.

Mr Tripathi's son Amanmani Tripathi told reporters that his parents were under doctors' supervision and based on their advice, further steps will be taken.

Amarmani Tripathi, who was elected from the Nautanva constituency, was a minister in the state's BJP government in 2001 and also in the BSP government in 2002. He has also been with the Samajwadi Party.

During the day, the Supreme Court also issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government, Mr Tripathi and his wife, seeking their replies within eight weeks on a plea filed by the poet's sister Nidhi Shukla.

Nidhi Shukla, who had been at the forefront of this legal fight, earlier said she feared for her life and that of her family in case the two are released.

Poet Madhumita was pregnant when she was shot dead on May 9, 2003, in Lucknow's Paper Mill Colony. Amarmani Tripathi was arrested in September 2003 in connection with the murder of the poet with whom he was allegedly in a relationship.

In October 2007, a Dehradun court sentenced Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani Tripathi to life imprisonment for the murder. Later, the Uttarakhand High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the sentences. The case was probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

"I have been telling everyone that this is going to happen. I have procured the documents through an RTI which clearly states that 62 per cent of the jail term that the two are said to have served had been spent out of jail.

"I submitted documents to all responsible persons telling them that between 2012 and 2023 he was not in jail. The government documents, which I have got through the state information commission, after a long fight, bear this out," Nidhi Shukla told PTI earlier in the day.

She alleged that the Tripathis misled authorities to get a premature release.

Lesbian Woman's Family Directed To Take Counselling By Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court has directed the parents and maternal uncle of a 22-year-old lesbian woman to undergo counselling in order to prepare themselves to accept her "as per her wishes".

The court's order came on a habeas corpus petition by the woman's friend who claimed that she was "missing".

After interacting with the parties involved, a bench headed by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait directed the police to take the woman to a shelter home and make necessary arrangements for her boarding and lodging there.

While asking the director of the shelter home to provide "counselling session" to the woman, the court observed that her family members should also be counselled on alternate days.

The bench, also comprising Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, further directed the "parents and all other concerned" to "not to extend any kind of threat or undue pressure upon" their daughter and the petitioner.

"It is further directed that parents of (the woman) shall also be counselled at least on an alternative day to prepare them to accept (her) as per her wishes. The parents and maternal uncle are directed to approach the aforesaid shelter home for counselling, who shall be counselled by the Director and if they wish for further counselling, they shall be counselled accordingly, on the alternate days, thereafter," said the court in a recent order.

The parents of the woman "agreed" before the court that she should be sent to the shelter home in order to "reflect and introspect about her future".

The woman told the court that she was not willing to accompany her parents or any of the relatives and would either go with the petitioner or to the shelter home.

"Hardik Pandya Is Impact Player": IPL Winning Coach Praises All-Rounder

Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody said that flexibility is important in modern-day cricket and Team India may be required to throw someone like the all-rounder Hardik Pandya up the order. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced a strong 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup which will begin on August 30 with Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul returning to the squad and Tilak Verma also getting a place in the team. Speaking exclusively to ESPNCricinfo, Moody spoke on Rohit Sharma's statement concerning flexibility in the line-up.

"Well, I think in this day and age, whether it be 50-over cricket or 20-over cricket, you need to have an open mind. You need to be flexible, and we talk a lot about match-ups. At times, we talk too much about match-ups in the media, so I think that is where I think Rohit Sharma is coming from. You know, there may be a case where you might have a left-hander that is due to come out at number 6, then suddenly the opposition brings out a left-arm spinner or a leg spinner. So, therefore, that number 6 is going to be the next person to come into bat," he said.

"Now, the thing that is really important from a team's point of view, you have that flexibility and open mind, and I think that is what he was trying to articulate to the media there. Yes, there will be flexibility, but there are a couple of places that may not be moving because really the foundation of your innings needs to be concrete, you need stability there and role clarity there. But, you know, Hardik Pandya is an impact player. There may be a time you need to throw him up the order just to get the innings moving quicker than what it has been moving. So, all those tactical nuances, you need to have an open mind too," he added.

Also, speaking exclusively to Star Sports, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar also spoke about the flexibility of the Indian line-up.

"I will make a quick point though; let us not confuse flexibility, the kind of flexibility that I expect. For example, where I mentioned Virat Kohli as a number 4 to solve the problem with Ishan Kishan batting down the order, that is the kind of flexibility that I am talking about in the starting template. Now, what happens during the course of the match down the order at number 4, 5, 6; you have two spinners operating, turning a bit, then those kinds of moves are commonplace and something that you expect. Somebody like Hardik Pandya coming in and there is an off-spinner, or Jadeja coming up before left-arm spinner's bowling, now those are okay.

"I think with the starting template or with the plan at the start of the game switching an important position. The whole debate really is about how your 4, 5, 6 are going to look. KL Rahul, I worry about the selection with this niggle; Shreyas Iyer more optimistic and both Ravi (Shastri) and myself when we talked about Virat Kohli at number 4, that's the kind of flexibility I am talking about, not while the match is happening and just for a short time where somebody can tackle a particular bowler."

The 2023 Asia Cup will be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka with the tournament running from August 30 to September 17.

Asia Cup will serve as an important benchmark for India's preparations for the World Cup starting in October and will also help selectors make choices for the marquee event.

India will open their Asia Cup campaign with an iconic clash against Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been appointed Rohit Sharma's deputy in Asia Cup 2023.

The squad also marks the return of Jasprit Bumrah to ODI cricket after a gap of more than one year. After proving his fitness in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland, Bumrah is set to test himself in the 50-over format heading into the World Cup. India's pace attack will be boosted by the return of Mohammed Siraj, who was not in the team for some time due to a sore ankle.

Tilak Varma made it to India's Asia Cup squad on the back of his strong performance against West Indies during the tour that ended this month.

Bowling all-rounders Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel are also in the squad to give the captain more diversity in choices. Apart from Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja is also in the team as an all-rounder.

Pakistan, India and Nepal are in Group A while Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are in Group B. The tournament will follow a hybrid model with Pakistan hosting four matches across two venues and Sri Lanka hosting the remaining games.

The six group-stage matches will be followed by the Super Fours, beginning September 6.

The final will be played by the top two teams at the end of the Super Fours on September 17 in Colombo.

Squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.

UK Space Agency Congratulates India On Chandrayaan-3's Success

Director of Championing Space at the UK Space Agency Professor Anu Ojha OBE congratulated India on the successful soft-landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon.

He further said that the successful landing of Chandryaan-3 in the southern polar region of the moon is evidence that we are living in a new space age.

"Congratulations to India on this amazing feat of engineering and perseverance. The successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 in the southern polar region of the moon is further evidence that we are living in a new space age, with space agencies and companies across the world setting their sights on the Moon and beyond," Anu Ojha OBE said in a statement.

He further said, "This current crop of missions is focused on new areas of opportunity - there are important scientific discoveries to be made about the presence of water on the lunar surface, which could support humans to live and work there for extended periods of time."

Anu Ojha highlighted that the UK Space Agency is committed to supporting these international efforts.

"The UK Space Agency is committed to supporting these international efforts and putting UK science and technology at the heart of some of the most exciting global exploration missions, for the benefit of our planet and its people," he said.

The UK Space Agency also congratulated ISRO on Chandrayaan-3 landing.

"History made! Congratulations to @isro #Chandrayaan3," the UK Space Agency tweeted on Wednesday.

The spacecraft was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota on July 14.

A GSLV Mark 3 (LVM 3) heavy-lift launch vehicle was used for the launch of the spacecraft that was placed in the lunar orbit on August 5 and since then it was through a series of orbital manoeuvres been lowered closer to the moon's surface.

Ever since the July 14 launch, ISRO had been maintaining that the health of the spacecraft remained "normal".

On August 5, Chandrayaan-3 was successfully inserted into the lunar orbit with multiple key manoeuvres thereafter.

Then on August 17, the mission marked another giant leap in its lunar quest as the 'Vikram' lander module of the spacecraft successfully separated from the propulsion module on Thursday. The Chandrayaan-3 mission's lander is named after Vikram Sarabhai (1919-1971), who is widely regarded as the father of the Indian space programme.

Then the deboosting of the Lander module was undertaken in two phases. Deboosting is the process of slowing down to position itself in an orbit where the orbit's closest point to the Moon is.

The stated objectives of Chandrayaan-3, India's third lunar mission, were a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, the rover moving on the moon's surface, and in-situ scientific experiments.

Upon landing, the lander and the rover were to operate for one lunar day. One day on the Moon is equal to 14 days on Earth.

Chandrayaan-3's development phase commenced in January 2020, with the launch planned sometime in 2021.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic brought an unforeseen delay to the mission's progress. The approved cost of Chandrayaan-3 is Rs 250 crores (excluding launch vehicle cost).

Chandrayaan-2 mission was only "partially successful" since the lander lost contact after a hard landing, but the ISRO earlier this week successfully established two-way communication between the Chandrayaan-3 lander module and the still orbiting Chandrayaan-2 orbiter.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) founder Vikram Sarabhai, who is considered the father of the Indian space program, once said India must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems facing society.

The establishment of the ISRO was one of Vikram Sarabhai's greatest achievements. He successfully convinced the government of the day of the importance of a space programme for a developing country like India.

"Centre Has No Authority To Violate Rights Of States": Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday hit out at the Centre and said it does not have the authority to violate the rights of the states by sidelining them from inaugurating development works.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating various development works in Sikar district recently, Ashok Gehlot alleged that he was not invited to the programme.

"The name of the chief minister (to participate in the programme) was written initially but was later removed. Neither the prime minister nor the central government has the right to violate the rights of the states. Regarding this, I will write a letter to the PM that you came to Rajasthan but how can you delink the chief minister from the programme," Ashok Gehlot said during his address to officials at his residence here after the inauguration of various development works.

He said the state government will set up medical colleges in three districts Rajsamand, Jalore and Pratapgarh on its own after the central government did not approve them.

"Despite all this, when the prime minister comes to Rajasthan, we welcome him. But (this time) the PM did not give us a chance to welcome him. It is surprising that you are coming to our land, you are launching the programme, inaugurating something, and for whatever reason, you did not include the chief minister of Rajasthan in that programme," Ashok Gehlot said.

He said the prime minister should get it investigated where did the "mistake happen" and who was responsible for removing his name from the list of those to speak in the programme.

Ashok Gehlot said that it was not about him but about the federal structure of the country that was in question. A situation is seen for the first time that if you oppose the government, you are declared a "traitor", he said.

Rover Pragyan Rolls Out Of Chandrayaan-3 Lander Near Moon's South Pole

India's moon mission Chandrayaan-3 made a perfect landing today near the South Pole of the moon. The next big manoeuvre was the rolling out of the Pragyan rover, which will send data from the spot to the lander that will be relayed to space agency ISRO.

The launch of the rover, though, took time. This is because the rover cannot be launched till the dust kicked up by the touchdown of the Vikram lander is dissipated. The gravity of moon being a fraction of that of Earth, dust does not settle the way it does on Earth.

The scientists were concerned that if the rover is rolled out before the dust dissipates, it can damage the cameras and other sensitive equipment on the rover. It was, however, quicker than a day that ISRO Chief S Somnath had spoken of.

"The rover will come out in a few hours. Sometimes it takes a day also... Once the rover comes out, it will do two experiments," Mr Somnath had told reporters in the euphoric moments after the landing.  "We are looking at a very exciting time after Pragyan's entry... It will do experiments for 14 days," he had added.

The rover Pragyan will first extend its solar arrays and roll out with a wire connected to the lander Vikram. The wire will be snapped once the rover is stable on the lunar surface. It will then start its scientific mission.

The experiments will continue for 14 days -- which is a single moon day. As the night on the moon begins, the solar-powered equipment is likely to shut down.

The data to be sent by Pragyan is of vital importance, given the traces of water found in the area. This was detected by a NASA instrument aboard the ISRO's Chandrayaan-1 probe in 2009.

Chandrayaan-3 is the first moon mission to land near the South Pole of the moon and this is the first opportunity to explore the possibility of the presence of water -- which will be crucial commodity in view of future moon missions.

The presence of water holds hope for future moon missions -- it could be used as a source of drinking water, to cool equipment and broken down to produce oxygen. It can also have clues to the origins of oceans.

"Unacceptable": Court On "Article 370 Ceased To Exist After 1957" Argument

The Supreme Court Tuesday termed as "unacceptable" the submission that Article 370 of the Constitution ceased to operate once the term of the constituent assembly of Jammu and Kashmir ended in 1957 after drafting the state's Constitution.

The remark by a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud came when senior advocate Dinesh Dwivedi, appearing for intervenor Prem Shankar Jha, argued that nothing of Article 370, which accorded special status to the erstwhile state, survived once the Constitution of J-K was enacted on January 26, 1957 and the term of the state's constituent assembly ended.

Jha, who has challenged the August 5, 2019 decision of the Centre to abrogate Article 370, raised the legal question about whether Article 370 ceased to operate or exist after the enactment of the Constitution of J&K and the dissolution of the constituent assembly.

This led the bench to raise queries on the legality of the submissions.

The bench, also comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai and Surya Kant told Dwivedi that the court has to look at the Indian constituent assembly debates and the intent of the makers of the Indian Constitution in a manner in which the Article 370 was framed.

"I am arguing somewhat differently from what my friends have argued. They want some part of Article 370 to survive. My argument is that nothing survives. All the powers conferred under Article 370, I would show, cease to operate once the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir was enacted," Dwivedi said.

The CJI said the consequence of the argument will be that the Constitution of India and its application to Jammu and Kashmir would "stand frozen as of January 26, 1957".

"Therefore, no further development in Indian constitutional law can at all apply, according to you, to the state of Jammu and Kashmir after 1957. How can that be acceptable?" he said.

The bench told Dwivedi, "You are asking us to read what is not there in Article 370. Your submission is that it will be frozen after the constituent assembly of J-K frames the Constitution but that does not appear to be following. We have to look at the constituent assembly debates in a manner in which Article 370 was framed." Dwivedi said when the Article was framed, Jammu and Kashmir was in turmoil and the only legal entity was the state government and, therefore, the provision said there should be "consultation and concurrence" on the matters related to Union and concurrent list and those which do not fall under the Instrument of Accession.

"The constituent assembly was about to be set up. Hence, all the decisions which were taken in consultation and concurrence with the state government were to be placed before the constituent assembly of J-K. Therefore, Article 370 was a temporary provision," he contended.

The senior lawyer said looking at the provision and the constituent assembly debates, it can be clearly inferred that Article 370 was temporary and ceased to exist after January, 1957.

The bench said what was being submitted was contrary to arguments advanced by others opposed to the abrogation as they said that the provision had acquired permanent status after the term of the state's constituent assembly ended.

"This is what is creating a problem. Perhaps our thinking in the manner which we have been tuned to think for the past 70 years is that there should be One Nation-One Constitution. But where is that prescribed? It should be prescribed in the Constitution which does not say so," the senior lawyer said.

CJI Chandrachud then asked can the court say that a speech made by a member of the constituent assembly, however weighty, represented the commitment of India to Jammu and Kashmir.

"This will have a bearing on the interpretation of the Constitution", the CJI said. Justice Kaul also questioned Dwivedi on his line of argument and said according to him, Article 370 was a defunct provision and no purpose was served having it.

"Yet the provision continued to be there in the Indian Constitution. Constitution Orders (orders applying provisions of Indian Constitution to J-K) have been issued pre-1957 and post 1957. Yet nobody thought about removing it. The association of people with Article 370 was negatory and hence nothing survives. This is your argument?" Justice Kaul summed up Dwivedi's contentions.

Dwivedi told the bench that past practices would not justify the invalidity of a provision and this is a settled law.

"The law, as I understand, is that however long a past practice is if it is constitutionally illegal, it cannot be justified. What I am trying to show is the intent of our Constitution framers. We cannot read Article 370 dehors (other than) the intent is my question,” he said.

Justice Kaul said it is difficult to accept that the constituent assembly debates amount to an assurance that Article 370 would dissolve itself after the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir has been enacted and term of the state's constituent assembly comes to an end. Senior advocate CU Singh, appearing for Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami and others challenged the enactment of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 and said the erstwhile state could not be divided into two union territories.

The hearing remained inconclusive and will continue on Wednesday.

Several petitions challenging the abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which split the erstwhile state into two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh - were referred to a Constitution bench in 2019.

"By Failing...": Ex-Star's Tongue In Cheek Take On Tilak's Asia Cup Call

Tilak Varma's inclusion in India's Asia Cup 2023 squad was a proof that if one has potential, reaching great heights in your field is always possible. The left-handed batter showed potential in the T20I series against West Indies in the middle-order and he was justly rewarded. In a line-up full of right-handed starts, Varma provides variety though he lacks experience. Former India player Sanjay Manjrekar praised Varma's inclusion and made a tongue in cheek remark. "Yes, because he is in hot form. Look at his domestic career, he's got the numbers to merit a call for India. And also, tongue in cheek, he is also getting ready for 50 overs cricket by failing in his last two matches in the T20 format.

"So he is getting ready for 50-over cricket. It is hard to find a weakness in him, in white ball cricket. And as I've mentioned before, let's have some impact, quality players at number four, five, and six. There's a tremendous rush for spots number one, two, and three, in Indian cricket, let's have these number four, five, six batters out there," Manjrekar said on Star Sports.

Manjrekar was very impressed with the clarity of the team selection and how there was reason behind every decision taken at the press conference, he said: "The press conference was a very impressive debut by Ajit Agarkar as chairman of selectors. What I liked is both Rohit and Ajit giving a lot of respect to the people asking the questions. There were a lot of open conversations, no one was scared of trying to reveal something they shouldn't.

"The answer about KL Rahul was important. A niggle has emerged along with the injury he recovered from, and that's why they had an extra keeper. Now that kind of detailed sharing of information is what we need, and I hope they remain candid. Nice articulation of all the decisions that have been taken. And when you look at the squad, I think this is the World Cup squad that you're looking at. Two players will be deleted. There is a chance one of the spinners will be deleted and an extra keeper or maybe a fast bowler. But this is more or less the World Cup squad that we are looking at, barring two players that they would have to leave out."

Samson "Being Wasted" At No. 6 In T20Is: Ashwin Opens Up On This 'Debate'

Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson to bat at no. 3 in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland. Samson, who has been synonymous with no. 3 while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been asked to bat lower down the order for India. However, with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan rested for the Ireland tour, Samson might get the chance to bat in his preferred position.

"Jitesh is a right-hander and Rinku is a left-hander. Both Jitesh Sharma and Rinku Singh are the ones who could fit in the number 5, and 6 roles. However, I feel Sanju Samson will get the nod as the keeper ahead of Jitesh Sharma. The series is an extraordinary chance to play Sanju as a keeper and make him bat at number 3. He will surely bat at number 3 or 4," Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin also weighed in on the debate around Samson being wasted at no. 6. He feels that India has always been a batting heavy team, especially the top four batters.

"Another debate is on how Sanju Samson is a top-order batter and how he is being wasted as a number 6 in T20Is. See, Team India's top 4 has been really heavy all this while," he added.

India won the first T20I against Ireland by two runs via DLS method on Friday.

Samson, however, played just one ball, remaining unbeaten on 1.

ISRO Recruitment Test Cancelled After 2 From Haryana Caught Cheating

The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) on Monday cancelled the test held a day ago to hire technical staff, after two men from Haryana were arrested for allegedly impersonating and cheating in the exam.

The VSSC, in a notification, said that the written tests to the posts of technician-B, draughtsman-B and radiographer-A held on August 20 at various centres in Thiruvananthapuram now stand cancelled.

"The revised schedule for the test will be informed to all the candidates through the VSSC website in due course. Inconvenience caused is regretted," the statement said.

The move comes after the Kerala Police caught two people red-handed at separate test centres as they cheated and arrested them.

On checking their identities, the police realised they were proxying for the actual candidates when their names did not match with those appearing for the exam.

Besides these two, four others from Haryana are in police custody for cheating.

The police launched a full-fledged investigation into the incident, had also urged VSSC to cancel the test.

As more than 400 candidates from Haryana had taken the test, there are suspicions over whether coaching centres may be involved. An investigating team will be sent to the state to collaborate with the state's police for the probe, the police had said earlier.

A case under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and various other provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act has been lodged against those arrested, the police said.

"The two arrested accused will also be charged for impersonating the actual candidates," they said.

The national-level recruitment test was held only in Kerala at 10 exam centres, the police added.

No Further Change In WC Schedule Possible, BCCI Tells HCA: Report

The Indian cricket board on Monday officially turned down the request of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) to change the ICC World Cup 2023 schedule. The HCA had appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a change in schedule after the local police authorities expressed their reservations about deploying adequate personnel on back-to-back match days. "BCCI secretary Jay Shah held a meeting with HCA officials in Delhi after the Asia Cup team selection meeting (for which the secretary is convenor) and the state unit was categorically told that no changes would be entertained after a revised schedule was issued on August 9," a BCCI source informed.

The BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla had already indicated on Sunday that "changes (to the schedule) were unlikely." The World Cup schedule, which was first released on June 27 in Mumbai amidst fanfare, went through a lot of changes with dates and timings of as many as nine games, including the marquee India vs Pakistan clash.

The Indo-Pak match was originally scheduled for October 15, but the game was advanced by a day because it was slotted on the first day of Navratra.

This particular change in schedule led to Pakistan's game against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad being advanced by a day from October 11 to 10. Hyderabad was also hosting Netherlands' game against New Zealand on October 9.

Hence, the local police officials had asked for at least a day's gap between the two games.

However, that would have meant slotting the New Zealand vs Netherlands game on October 8. It would have put a lot of stress on the teams and both the countries wouldn't have agreed upon.

New Zealand are playing England in the opening game on October 5 in Ahmedabad and the next day they will fly to Hyderabad and would have received only one training session (on October 7) in that case.

Netherlands open their campaign against Pakistan on October 6 in Hyderabad and advancement by a day meant that October 7 would go in recovery and next day they would be playing again.

Neither ICC nor the two boards (NZC and Netherlands authority known as KNCB) would have agreed to this request.

Ticket Checker Says Attacked With Knife By Drunken Man On Train In Kerala

A travelling ticket examiner (TTE) was allegedly attacked with a knife onboard a moving train in Kerala by a man against whom the railway official had complained to the RPF for being drunk.

The incident occurred on the West Coast Express on Sunday close to Vatakara in Kozhikode district, a Railway police officer said.

The accused was arrested based on the TTE's statement, the police said.

The TTE claimed to have suffered an injury to the back of his head in the attack.

He told reporters that from Kannur he notice the alleged attacker was drunk and accordingly informed the Railway Protection Force's (RPF) control room.

Subsequently, RPF officers made him deboard the train at Thalassery, the TTE said.

However, the man got back on the train under the pretext of getting his bag and then went and sat in the general compartment, he said.

Later while checking for tickets, he found the man in another reserved coach and on confronting him, the accused abused the official in Hindi and took out a knife and started waving it around, the TTE claimed, adding that he was injured during the ensuing scuffle.

Some of the passengers standing behind the accused managed to restrain him, averting any serious injuries to the ticket checker, the official said.

2nd T20I: UAE Thrash New Zealand By 7 Wickets For Historic Win

United Arab Emirates captain Muhammad Waseem made 55 to set up a seven-wicket win over New Zealand on Saturday in Dubai as the hosts levelled the three-match T20 series. Set 143 to win after again choosing to bowl first, the UAE lost opener Aryansh Sharma without scoring before Waseem and Vriitya Aravind (25) steadied the innings. Waseem struck four fours and three sixes in his 29-ball knock, which ended when he skied left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner to extra cover. Asif Khan finished off the job with an unbeaten 48 as he smacked New Zealand skipper Tim Southee for three boundaries in the 16th over to seal a famous victory with 26 balls to spare.

Mark Chapman's 63 was the standout contribution in New Zealand's 142-8.

Opener Chad Bowes and Jimmy Neesham, who both scored 21, were the only other batters to reach double figures for the tourists.

Aayan Afzal Khan ripped through New Zealand's top order, the left-arm spinner bowling Santner and Dane Cleaver in successive balls before having Bowes stumped to record figures of 3-20.

New Zealand won the first match of the series by 19 runs on Thursday. The series finale is at the same venue on Sunday.

Not Pandya! This Player Might Be Rohit's Deputy For Asia Cup, WC: Report

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah appears to be a strong contender to become vice-captain of the Indian team, alongside all-rounder Hardik Pandya, for the upcoming Asia Cup as well as ODI World Cup, starting October 5. While Pandya has been made the regular T20I captain, Bumrah, who has made an international comeback against Ireland in the ongoing T20I series that started on Friday, is set to give tough competition to the colourful Baroda all-rounder.

"If you look in terms of leadership seniority, Bumrah is ahead of Pandya as he captained the Test team in 2022. He has also been ODI vice-captain before Pandya during the ODI tour of South Africa.

"Don't be surprised if you see Bumrah being made ODI deputy to Rohit for both Asia Cup and World Cup. There is a reason why he was handed captaincy in Ireland instead of Ruturaj," a BCCI source in know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Pandya has had a successful stint as IPL skipper for Gujarat Titans, leading the team to the title in its maiden appearance in 2022 and to runners-up finish in 2023.

However, a lot of people feel that a shrewd tactician like Ashish Nehra has also played a lot of role in Gujarat Titans' success.

As far as the Indian team is concerned, Pandya lost his first bilateral series (T20I) in the West Indies where some of his decisions like not bowling Axar Patel or bringing Mukesh Kumar at the death were criticised.

Taking Drum To Field, Man Leaves It On Tracks After Spotting Train

A man was arrested in Jalna in Maharashtra for allegedly leaving a drum filled with stones on the railway tracks after spotting an incoming train, a police official said on Saturday.

Balu Makhmale (25) was arrested by the Railway Protection Force on Friday in connection with the incident that took place a month ago, he said.

"The drum was spotted by the driver of the Devgiri Express on the Satona-Osmanabad route. He applied emergency brakes and averted an accident. A probe found Makhmale was taking the drum to his field nearby but abandoned it on the tracks after the Devgiri Express reached close by," he said.

Jasprit Bumrah Shines On Return As India Beat Ireland In Rain-Hit 1st T20I

Pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah ticked all the boxes on his much-anticipated return to lead India to a two-run win over Ireland by DLS Method in a rain-interrupted first T20I of the three-match series, here on Friday. Leading the side on his return after an 11-month injury layoff, Bumrah claimed 2 for 24 with nine dot balls and formed a formidable pair with T20I debutant Prasidh Krishna (2/32) to restrict Ireland to 139 for 7 after opting to bowl.

Things looked bleak for the hosts after they were down 59 for 6 in the 11th over but their No 8 Barry McCarthy produced an amazing recovery, blazing his way to a 33-ball 51 not out (4x4, 4x6) to lift their total to a respectable 139 for 7.

He stitched a seventh wicket 57-run partnership with Curtis Campher (39) as Ireland reeled off 54 runs in the last five overs, losing just one wicket.

McCarthy was the stand out batter for the hosts as he reached his maiden half-century with a last-ball six off Arshdeep Singh who leaked 22 runs in the last over with McCarthy going hammers and tongs with two sixes and a four.

Chasing the tricky target under overcast conditions, India were off to a fluent start with Yashasvi Jaiswal (24; 23b) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (19 not out) putting together 46 runs in 6.2 overs.

But Craig Young produced a double blow, taking the left-handed duo of Jaiswal and Tilak Varma who was out for a golden duck.

India vice-captain Gaikwad, however, showed maturity and watched through the tricky phased, well aware that they were ahead of the DLS par score.

There was no stopping rain as umpires decided to call off the game at 6.15pm local time with India taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The victory also saw India return to winning ways after they went down 2-3 in the T20I series in the West Indies.

The second T20I is slated here on Sunday.

All eyes on Bumrah, the Indian pace sensation did not disappoint.

He bowled with rhythm, accuracy and a lot of venom. His rhythm was a lot better, he ran fast in his run-up to generate momentum and slowly ramped up the speed gun and went on to clock 140kph in the penultimate over when he conceded just one run.

He leaked 13 runs in just one of his four overs -- 16th.

Bumrah bowled up front only to see Irish opener Andy Balbirnie nudging his fuller delivery for a boundary behind square boundary.

Bumrah was quick to bounce back and knocked over Balbirnie's off-stump with a searing inswinger.

He grabbed in-form wicketkepper-batter Lorcan Tucker in his fifth delivery to get his campaign up and running.

After four overs, Prasidh, who made his T20I debut, was handed the ball and he ended the struggle of Harry Tector (9) with the batter giving a simple catch to Tilak Varma while looking for a ramp shot.

The wily Bishnoi then bamboozled skipper Paul Stirling (11) with a googly as Ireland slumped to 27 for 4 in the powerplay.

The hosts continued to pay the price for poor execution as Prasidh had George Dockrell (3) caught by Ruturaj Gaikwad at cover with a back-of-a-length delivery.

Campher hit a welcome boundary with a reverse sweep, while Mark Adair (16) picked up two fours to take Ireland to 50 for 5 in 9 overs.

However, Bishnoi came back to remove Adair after winning a video referral for an LBW decision. The batter danced down the track and looked to play a slog shot only to be hit on the pads by a ball turning in from outside.

McCarthy brought up Ireland's first maximum when he deposited Bishnoi over long on in the 13th over.

Campher ramped one over short fine, while McCarthy clubbed one across the mid-wicket boundary as the two kept Ireland ticking.

When Bumrah returned, Campher sent a low full toss across extra cover before smoking the India pacer for a maximum.

Prasidh was next in line as McCarthy slammed him across the point region before depositing the next on over long-on. He ended the over with another four as 15 runs came of it.

"Scripted Production": After Viral Video, Naga Group Denies Sending Arms To Manipur

The largest armed group of the Nagas that have signed a framework agreement with the centre has strongly denied allegations of supplying weapons and sending its cadre to Manipur to help a particular community, amid the ethnic violence between the hill-majority Kukis and the valley-majority Meiteis.

The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), or NSCN(IM), in a statement said a video being shared widely on social media showing a man alleging that NSCN(IM) sent its fighters to help the Meiteis in Manipur was a "scripted production by some mischievous agency".

In the video, the man alleged that 15 well-trained NSCN(IM) fighters are coming to Manipur to join the Meiteis in the fight against the Kukis. The Kuki-Zo-Chin tribes have started demanding a separate administration after violence broke out on May 3 during a protest against the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status.

The NSCN(IM) said the man in the video has been identified as H Khosiivei Lovingson Roah, who joined "national service" in October last year and finished his basic military training earlier this year.

"He is a private in the Naga army posted at Thungbo Brigade. On August 7, 2023, he was granted medical leave for an ear infection and sent to Dimapur, but he went missing since then," the NSCN(IM) said in the statement.

NSCN(IM) senior leader HR Shimray in the statement said the video clip is "evidently a pre-planned and scripted production of some mischievous agency aiming at furthering the mayhem and also painting the NSCN in a bad light."

Ethnic violence between the Kukis and Meiteis broke out in Manipur on May 3

In July this year, six people including an inspector of the Nagaland Police, an armed group leader, and four others were arrested for stealing ammunition from the state police armoury. The ammunition was allegedly to be sent to neighbouring Manipur. One of the arrested people was a leader of the NSCN(IM).

The NSCN (IM), formed in 1980, is led by 85-year-old Thuingaleng Muivah; the other top leader of the group, Isak Chishi Swu, died at 87 of multi-organ failure. In 1997, the NSCN-IM entered into a truce with the central government for peace and since then has been continuing dialogue with the centre's emissaries.

In August 2015, the NSCN-IM signed a framework agreement with the government which Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a "historic" step to usher in peace in the state.

Amid Paper Row, Ashoka Faculty Presses For Academic Freedom Committee

A group of faculty members of Ashoka University has written to its vice chancellor claiming that free thought within universities in India is in crisis today and demanded that all decisions on matters related to academic freedom should be put on hold till the promised committee for academic freedom is in place.

The letter comes following the resignation of assistant professor Sabyasachi Das after a controversy over his research paper which argued that the BJP won a disproportionate share of closely contested parliamentary seats in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, especially in states where it was the ruling party at the time.

While another professor Pulapre Balakrishnan has put in his papers in support of Das, the faculty members from Economics, Political Science, English and creative writing departments have have written to the governing body threatening a faculty exodus if Das is not offered reinstatement. The faculty members have also warned of stopping teaching till their demands are met.

"Free thought within universities in India is in crisis today, largely because of the near-absolute intolerance of critique. What is critique! It is legitimate disagreement, and comprises the raising of questions that are inextricable, at any given point, from the fabric of a free and healthy society. It is to be distinguished, firmly, from defamation or incitement to hatred or all categories of expression that will not stand up in a court of law or which do not abide by the Constitution.

"To stifle critique is to poison the life-blood of pedagogy, consequently, it is to dam age whatever future our students might have as serious thinkers. Recent events around a paper published by Professor Sabyasachi Das are a reminder that the crisis is an ongoing and deep one, with implications for every academic working at Ashoka University and, for that matter, in India," the joint letter signed by nearly 100 faculty members said.

The letter noted that it is not a crisis that will go away by wishing that papers like the one by Das will not be written in the future, because that is not a realistic possibility in a working institution.

"It will not be solved by apologies and resignations. It has to be addressed with academic freedom constituting the core of our position with regard to the crisis. Ashoka University drafted and adopted a document for academic freedom in 2021. It has been bewildering to witness events unfold in the last two weeks that are directly related to academic freedom in a way that makes no reference to this document and behaves, to all purposes, as if it does not exist.

"We ask that all responses to the matter of what may or may not be admissible in research and academic practice at Ashoka University proceed from now on according to the guidelines set out in this document, which, rather than any tweet or individual opinion, expresses the university's position on this all-important subject," it said.

The faculty has demanded that the committee for academic freedom, which the document had proposed be set up soon, be created immediately.

"It will bring much-needed transparency and procedural fairness whenever such issues arise. The absence of both are being felt acutely at this moment. It would also prevent, on such occasions, public pronouncements that claim to speak on behalf of Ashoka University of whose provenance almost no one at the university is aware.

"All such pronouncements and decisions about actions to be taken in such circumstances should emanate, after deliberation, from the committee for academic freedom. Decisions on matters related to academic freedom should be put on hold until the committee is in place," the letter said.

The university had earlier distanced itself from the paper, "Democratic Backsliding in the World's Largest Democracy" which was published on the Social Science Research Network on July 25 saying social media activity or public activism by Ashoka faculty, students or staff in their "individual capacity" does not reflect its stand.
