Former Fiji rugby captain, 'Big Joe' Veitayaki, dies aged 58; tributes pour in for the gentle giant

Former Fiji rugby captain Joeli Veitayaki, aged 58, has passed away unexpectedly. Known as Big Joe, he earned 49 caps for Fiji between 1994 and 2003, playing at the 1999 and 2003 Rugby World Cups. Veitayaki also played for the Chiefs, Blues, Northland, and Ulster, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field. Tributes highlight his strength, humility, and mentorship, and his son Haereiti Hetet continues the family’s rugby tradition.
